Soft Clipping
Morning of July 10, 2019. Sunday.
Dream #: 19,196-02. Reading time: 46 sec.
In the morning, noise from the street keeps me awake for a short time. Later, I enter a typical abstract state in an undefined environment but with a vague awareness of being on my back in our bed and seeing the imagery above me in a vertical orientation as if on a hovering screen. Over time, I mentally soft clip wave files, many of only about three seconds in length. Sometimes I perceive this as a focus on the noise that was outside, other times on short audio inserts for my music. I perform this mental task, though of which produces accompanying visuals, for seemingly at least twenty minutes. There is no sound in this state. It is somewhat satisfying, though in reality, soft clipping does not reduce loudness regarding the noise from the street that influenced this dream.
In real life, I mostly only use soft clipping on drums and percussion, as it otherwise distorts keyboards and other instruments (especially bass guitar). The purpose of soft clipping is to keep the loudness level (such as -12 dB RMS) while holding the peak at about -6 dB in a single track before mastering.
