Interesting. It doesn’t put me off if there are also good gay characters, though I’m a bit nervous to see how they manage the whole “real-life marginalized group (women, in this case) is in a position of authority” thing.

It looks like there's a storyline about rebelling against the establishment. And while any power structure can become corrupt, alternate histories with rebellion against newly-powerful groups that are oppressed IRL can wind up having unfortunate implications.

There’s a tightrope there. I’m curious to see if the show manages to walk it successfully.

Addendum: What is a book trope you can’t stand?

There are always exceptions, like when there’s a new twist on the trope but I have several. I am sick of “chosen ones” or of characters always coupling up at the end of a book. Also wars that have no meaningful casualties, that annoys me a lot too. Most common YA tropes honestly annoy me. Not to hate on the genre because obviously there are exceptions there too but that’s where I’ve experienced the most of them.

Book-bosomed: what is a book you feel everyone should read?

I think people should read what they like. There isn’t one book that I think everyone needs to consume, it’s important to read and read widely more than to pick out specific books, in my opinion. 

If I were to recommend a book that I just think is good or impactful in general, The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. It isn’t my favorite book but it was one of those that I read it and for whatever reason I find myself thinking about it all the time years later, although I didn’t particularly think it was all that as I read it.

Headcanon A:  realistic

Taako may have “ethereal, feminine beauty” or however the fuck Justin said it, but he dresses like trash 90% of the time. Boy’s a mess. He has a killer skin care routine, but he bleaches his hair so much there’s split ends everywhere, and he never has any clothes in his drawers or closet because he’s wearing about half of them at any one time.

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious

Taako ends up nursing a neverending grudge towards Lucas Miller and the entire Miller family for inventing elevators. (He also nurses a grudge towards the elevators.)

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends

I am ALL FOR Taako continuing to have memory issues after the Day of Story and Song. It’s so, so painful, but sometimes he’ll wake up and… things will just be gone. There are times when he forgets Lup again. It’s never when she’s around - it only takes her face for everything to come rushing back - but sometimes he’ll forget her, or the Starblaster, or just simple things from their century.

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.

Cha’ boy is actually great with kids. It seems like he’d be terrible with them, but he remembers what it’s like to be them, and doesn’t condescend. He spends more time at Taako’s Amazing School of Magic than he’d like to admit.
