Interesting fact for you! Though a company may be the copyright owner of a software’s source and object code, in the USA and Europe there are certain scenarios where decompiling (a form of reverse engineering) is permitted. That being said, what goes on in this clip from Halt and Catch Fire is probably not!

Do copyright rules for literature, music also govern cars?
In general, I find Richard Stallman nothing short of infuriating.
I have done a not inconsiderable amount of reading on software licensing and the whole legal shitstorm around it (including complete reads of about a dozen software licenses), and really I just do not like the GPL. I refuse to use it, whenever possible, and instead license all of my code under the Mozilla Public License 2.0 which is a share-alike open-source license with a dual-licensing clause for compatibility with the GPL where necessary.
LGPL, we can talk about, but the GPL is, as far as I'm concerned, is a cancerous tumour on the face of software and the legal landscape of computing that I'm not sure we'll ever be able to excise.
That being said, I do agree with his treatment of the term intellectual property, especially when it appears in legal documents. My personal favourite software license, Sun's CDDL (which is not GPL compatible due to an included patent-related clause not present in the GPL), makes unfortunate use of the term where it could be far better served with more explicit language.
I don't agree with Stallman's approach, but I do agree with his motivation.
