@sofuckingrock replied to your post: I’d like to do a “great Australian films” post but...
In my last semester of Uni to finish off my film minor/easy elective I did a unit called “Australian film and tv studies”…pretty much all I learnt was Australian films are cringe (though they’re getting better now) with the odd good one thrown in. Oh and also that black humour is an unspoken must in 99% of our films so it seems (if the class were in a lecture theatre it would’ve been prime napping time). I have a love/hate relationship with our film industry!
i did a film course and of about 25 people, there was only a handful that had seen an australian film in cinemas. some even had the plan of “fuck off to hollywood asap” which has never sat right with me, even though i understand why
the problem is, we don’t make enough films to have multiple good ones per year. the most recent data i can find is fro 2003 (woefully out of date) but in that year, the US produced 611 films. Australia produced 16. That is fucking shameful. I can watch an entire years worth of australian films in less than a week. and the law of averages comes into play; if 10% of films are good, we’d get 1 good movie and the US gets 61.
and it’s this whole cultural cringe issue that this country has that suffocates our entiire media industry. nobody is willing to give australian produced things a chance unless they’re sport or reality tv, and i highly suspect that the reality tv aspect is because there’s so much effort put into them that multiple are produced year in year out. nobody is willing to watch an aussie film or series simply because it’s made here and there’s not much hope of seeing it, and nobody is willing to finance it because nobody has faith in the audiences
we have so much unbelievable talent in this country thats being fucking squandered and it breaks my heart to see it in this mess.
i got to tim's hair and gave up it's just too much
happy birthday! x
Thank you! You too.
hi! as far as that adelaide stuff goes- I was reading a couple articles about different stuff at the same time, and for some reason Adelaide stuck as the other show date, not Melbourne. So I definitely meant Melbourne, not Adelaide! ha. Confusion over! :P
LOL You're not the first to mention it, but haha whoopsie.
But if anyone does here about any additional dates, no matter where they are, let me know!
