I've noticed that there are very little sprite work in this side, let alone any comics (aside from the Toa Onua and Lewa). Any reason for this or just a coincidence?
Good question, actually; I hadn't even noticed. I'm not totally sure if it was a conscious decision to avoid covering sprite work so far, but now I think about it there's probably a few decent reasons why we haven't. For one, as much as we're all generally supporters of the field in and of itself, the fact remains that sprite work possesses quite the social stigma, ESPECIALLY around the BZP community which seems to comprise the bulk of our tiny readership. It interests us, but it likely doesn't interest our audience, so... yeah. Or something like that.
I guess there's also the problem that compared to other fields of bonkles fanwork, we're all SO UP IN the pixelry business that a) we're borderline unpleasable snobs in the area, b) accordingly we see very little which we actually like which isn't made by us in the first place these days (even worse, we also rarely see anything made by us :P), and c) our tastes these days tend toward the ironic and satirical (see: BAC), so our views of the field are VERY biased and probably unreasonably doused in nostalgia.
Looking around in our drafts, though, it looks like Kahi was working on some sort of tribute essay about Lavaside Rahi that ultimately never came to fruition. Shame.
Point is, maybe we will get around to it eventually. It'll have to be up to one of the others, though; I have no idea about what the sprite comic community is like around BZP these days, aside from the bad ones which end up on the Lunacy.
EDIT BY LIME: Good sprite comics aren't really even a thing on BZP anymore, as far as I can tell - which sucks because there actually used to be some pretty cool stuff there. Or at least I REMEMBER there being some pretty cool stuff, but if my own old sprite comics are anything to go by, my standards weren't particularly high back then. Maybe someday I'll get around to taking off the nostalgia goggles and trying to dig up some legitimately good ones. Which shouldn't be hard, since I made an entire majshelf folder like two years ago dedicated to archiving the best ArtIII has to offer. And by someday I guess I mean probably later today???
There's actually kind of a problem with this that just occurred to me, though, which also sort of explains why we haven't posted any sprite comics yet. The thing about most of the good BZP comics out there is that they're absolutely saturated with injokes. Jokes that we would find hilarious because we've spent years observing and helping to create ArtIII's unique subculture, but most of the Solace's followers wouldn't even get at all. Like, imagine if someone who's never read Homestuck were to start from a random recent conversation. They wouldn't be familiar with the characters at all, and all the callbacks and SBaHJisms and stuff would just fall flat and not be funny to them. A lot of the good sprite comics on BZP are kind of like that, except instead of just having to read that particular series up to that point, you have to be familiar with like a bunch of obscure sprite comic series that often weren't even all that funny in the first place, and basically the history of this entire subforum and the authors that inhabit it. And that's kind of a big requirement just to understand why some half-decent sprite comics are supposed to be funny.
A note on submissions
If you're going to submit something, it would be nice if you could format it in the way we format most of our posts, or at least mention who made it so we can properly credit them
Someone just submitted a really nice MOC, but it's just a deeplinked image on flickr with no indication as to the source, so... yeah that's not getting posted anytime soon
ask and submit boxes are now open here
here and here
please? we're so lonely :P
Guys, I have a confession to make: as of late, I find myself (re)developing a far less ironic and more legitimate interest in BIONICLE and its fandom. Maybe it's because I've been replaying Templar's early work like MNOLG, or because I've observed that BZP seems to be changing for the legitimate better recently, or how I keep finding great fanworks, but I'm feeling really optimistic about this fandom as of late.
Somehow, starting a blog which is pretty much the opposite of the Lunacy seemed like a good idea in all of this, so that's what happened. Hence, the Solace of LEGOman Values, also known as "the day the Lunacy decided to try its hand at lame puns on its own name".
Whereas the Lunacy is about the dark and seedy underbelly that is bad fanwork and loldrama, the Solace is about shining some (more) light upon some of the best this fandom has to offer. There'll be a few minor differences, though: we're intending to focus primarily (but not exclusively) on BIONICLE and Hero Factory fanwork on the Solace, simply because there are like a billion general LEGO blogs and/or LEGO blogs devoted to specific themes beside these two, whereas BIONICLE/Hero Factory ones are significantly rarer to our knowledge and we're more familiar with the BIONICLE/HF fandom(s) anyway. Either way, there will still be some inevitable overlap with other, more famous ones like The Brothers Brick (which you really should be reading), but hey, more blogs about good stuff never did any harm.
That said, you'll find that the majority of our proper reviews, essays (if they exist), fandom historical profilings and other miscellaneous unique musings will remain here, or at least they'll be initially posted here and just reblogged to the Solace later. In a way, they kind of have more of a place here rather than there.
The Solace of LEGOman Values is still being set up, but we should be done there soon.
