Solidus of the Roman emperor Valens (r. 364-378 CE), struck at Antioch in 369 to mark the five-year anniversary (quinquennalia) of his accession to the throne. The obverse bears a pearl-diademed bust of Valens. The reverse, meanwhile, is intended to stress the concord between Valens and Valentinian, his elder brother and co-emperor. The two men are depicted seated, their heads surrounded by halos (nimbi) betokening their exalted status as recipients of divine favor. Each man holds a globe and scepter.

The minting of this coin marked a high point in Valens' fortunes: he had just defeated a band of Goths in pitched battle and taken the title Gothicus Maximus. Only nine years later, however, Valens (now the senior emperor after his brother's death) would be defeated and killed by the Goths at Adrianople, severely weakening the already strained military resources of the Empire and contributing to the eventual dissolution of its western half.
