Miller scoffed, looking down into his lap. He said nothing for a while. “I am your mentor, not your friend.” “Uh huh,” David remarked bitterly.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Would it have been worse not knowing? 

David knows what he feels towards his Master is wrong, and he knows Miller would never reciprocate. Miller is an enigma of mixed signals and anger, bothered by something David could never come close to understanding. He will try, though.

Set loosely in 1994, before the events of Metal Gear 1&2. More info in A/N.

Chapter one: Spite

"David noticed that the Master was not budging from the doorway. Of course, why should he? They looked at each other for a moment before Miller raised his eyebrows."

Chapter two: Prying Eyes

"“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” Miller’s voice was low but insistent, dangerous, speaking into the back of David’s hair."

On a quest to obtain his confiscated property, David digs a little too deep.

Chapter three: A Bargain Gone Awry

"he knew then that Miller had noticed what David had done. He knew, and he couldn’t say anything about it. Not yet. Not in front of the other men." David has figured out what his next move is, but Miller can't be played like a game of chess.

Chapter four: One's Nature

"Miller cleared his throat, and swiftly put his glasses back in place. His coffee steamed the lens as he drank from it, wincing against the heat and general bitterness. It almost explained away the flush rising up his neck."

David just wants to get through the day after the disaster of last night, and he almost succeeds... Almost...

Chapter five: Controlling Biology

Miller slowly met his eyes. “That must be…” the column of his neck constricted, choking his voice, “... hard for you.” Miller is not the best man to ask for help.

Chapter six: Bite The Bullet

"David knew that when he opened his eyes again, it couldn’t have been more than a split second later, and yet everything felt different." Things get confrontational...

Chapter seven: Out Of Hand

"Miller didn’t answer, didn’t even try to. He was locked up tightly, jaw hinged shut, approaching rigor mortis.   Miller's 'helping hand' has done more damage than good. Who could have guessed?

Chapter eight: Roadkill

"When David entered, his newly unshaded eyes drifted up in their sockets to look at him with a stare that was miles away, his eyes bloodshot to the point where his irises looked like glass in the waning light." Pain can sometimes bring change.

Chapter nine: Flinch

Miller relaxed again, releasing a single steady breath out, twin plumes of condensed warm air pushed from his nose. “Well, good morning to you too,” he said stiffly. Things continue to feel different.

Chapter ten: Mirage

"He needed his forgiveness, he needed it more than he needed him in any other way. He would leave him alone forever, so as long as he could get his forgiveness."

SoliMiller - Grief

Master Miller is dead. Now David is left picking up the pieces.

“Snake! That’s not Master Miller! Master Miller’s body was just discovered at his home. He’s been dead for at least three days.” The funeral was closed-casket. Not many showed up either. Hal had gone with David to support his newfound friend. Miller’s ex-wife and daughter were there too, then Mei Ling, and Campbell. The man was a recluse in his cabin in Alaska. It had been only him and his huskies after David went into service. Miller had left no funeral arrangements, probably assuming that no one would bother to show up. It was up to David to arrange everything. What a bastard. He was grateful for Hal, who had funeral arranging experience, and he refused to leave David’s side. Grief had finally started to settle in, now that David was not busying himself with everything. Now sitting beside Hal in a small Alaskan church, the pianist playing ‘Amazing Grace.’ Miller did not believe in God. David had taken whatever funds Miller had left, the funds that he had been slowly draining for beer money and whatever else he did by himself. David was angry. At himself. He could have visited more. At Miller. The least he could have done was arrange a damn funeral by now. At Campbell. He could have done something. Anything to prevent what had happened. At his ‘brother,’ Liquid. He killed the only man he ever had a real connection to. Softer hands interlaced with his own. It was Hal. Gentle eyes behind rounded glasses, an awkward smile that managed to warm David’s heart every single time. He is one of the first friends he has ever had. Though he has really only ever known Miller. Hal was such a sweet man. A man who did not deserve what this life has given him. It was admirable, having gone through so much, and yet, here he was, never mad at the world. He still saw the good in it and still wanted to make it a better place. David has never known anyone so naturally good in his life. Hal did not say a word. He did not need to. Not to David. They both just knew what the other was saying. Miller was not a perfect man. Far from it. Especially in his older years. David could feel the sadness that radiated from the man, even without seeing his eyes, which were constantly concealed by shades. Miller had a wife and a child. Yet, he divorced her and never attempted to get visitation with his daughter. He had the opportunity to move on the best he could from the life that had burned him, yet he was constantly stuck in the past, ruining any relationship that tried to come after. It felt like Miller never saw David as his own person. Always the son of Big Boss, his shadow. A means to an end, to bring back the man who burned him. Despite hating him, he wanted nothing more than to have him back through his son.
