Súil is the Irish word for 'eye'.
However, at a prehistoric point, the word used to mean 'sun', developing its later meaning through metaphor.
It's part of a big family of 'sun'-words, which also includes Latin sōl, Ancient Greek hḗlios, Russian solnce and Welsh haul.
Súil may also be cognate with the name of the goddess Sulis, who presides over the springs at Bath - a rare British example of the Sun conceptualised as feminine, which is standard in Baltic religion.
The Indonesian word for sun is "matahari", literally "eye of the day".
