Samantha held the book by its top corners as Deanna drove down the long, winding road. After traveling for so long with her sister, she'd grown accustomed to the blaring classic rock that boomed from the speakers or Deanna's voice as she shrieked along with the words. The most Samantha would do is bat an eye at the cacophony that surrounded her and return to the ancient text that sprawled across the pages.
The edges were tattered and browning with age. The words had been pressed down with force by an old quill, the ink still dark and vibrant as the day it had met the parchment. These words were meant to last. Samantha squinted in thought as her eyes roamed the pages. Some of it seemed familiar to where she could pick out words here and there. She knew they would have to seek out a professional. She knew that whatever the script foretold would tell them exactly what they were up against.
Veronica's texts: code 143 (Friday evening)

Veronica: she's legal, not jailbait Tabs but yeah her. she dyed it recently blonde
Tabby: I knew you had a thing for her even when she wasn't legal cuz wasn't she 17 when you were talking to her? (8:18 PM)
Veronica: not the point Tabs but yes she was
Tabby: whatev not judging you V. But you two aren't dating are you? why'd she get upset about you having your own fun?
Veronica: Joey's a werecat and smelled my fun on me. she didn't like it. no we weren't dating but I had to tell her my feelings and as a result we are now dating.
Tabby: this was your circular way of telling me you a girlfriend now. one who is several years younger than you and your boss at the clinic? V you do like to play with convention don't you (8:21 PM)
Veronica: yes I have a girlfriend. yes she is younger. yes she pays me but we're partners in the clinic. convention never applies to me, Tabs.
Tabby: so when do I get to meet her? she must obviously be something if you won't come clubbing in the city. you know I need to approve of her. (8:22 PM)
Veronica: she is something. it's a code 143 (8:24 PM)
