Hi Audrey! My apologies for bothering but I was wondering if you would be willing to give a few tips! I recently came across some of your works and they are absolutely wonderful! I gobbled up every word like I hadn't eaten in days and my eyes were sparkling out of admiration! But uhm.. well I was wondering if you could give any tips about writing NSFW? I never seem content with what I write, nor do I feel like I provide enough description? How do I become better? (Ask word limits aaa sry 4 rude)

Hi there! So glad to hear that you like my writing, oh my goodness you’re too kind :’D And you’re definitely not rude; those word limits are a pain in the ass. 

Since this is going to involve NSFW talk, I’ll put it under a cut

Oh, and my fellow NSFW/Smut writers, if you want to add anything please do! I’m sure there’s more advice out there that can help than just what I have to offer :D

When it comes to writing NSFW, I read. A lot. A whole helluva lot. I find a kink that I particularly like and try to seek out as much fic of it as possible. Now, sometimes this leads to finding real doozies, but those you can learn from just as much as you can from the stunningly excellent writing. When you’re reading it through, usually a second time, you can take a second to look at what it is that really gets you going. Is it the dirty talk, or the descriptions, or maybe the way that the author writes as a whole? I try to pick out at least one or two things that I like about it, or if I’m not a big fan, I pick out what I think I could do differently if I was writing it. From there, I go on to, not replicate it, but use what I find I like and write it out in my own voice. 

Say, for example, bondage is your thing, and you find this really great piece that goes into detail about just what type of rope one character is tied up with, what sort of implement is used on them if there is one, what they’re feeling, etc. and you focus on the internal dialogue, the way they react to the ropes around their wrists or the fact that they’re stronger than your average character and they still can’t move. Now that you’ve highlighted what you like, with that in mind go to a blank document and write down everything that comes to mind WITHOUT looking back at the original writing. We’re not looking for verbatim, but with that work in mind, you can generally come up with something similar to what was in the first. Play around with it until it sounds like you, and not like them, and voila! You’ve taken your first steps to writing something NSFW that makes you happy (which, lbr, is what this is all about =] )

I also use a lot of porn gifs for my inspiration. I absolutely love writing smutty PWPs, but sometimes they can feel a little repetitive. If you find a good NSFW blog, one that again makes you happy, and is what you’re looking for, it can be invaluable as a reference to go back to. Again, you don’t want to write what’s happening as you look at it, but rather as a frame of reference. If her leg is placed over his shoulder, perhaps, you can either use that, or ignore it if you think it doesn’t fit within the scene or your character isn’t so flexible. You’re using them as an idea and a reference, not an absolute =] Unless you want to, which of course is your prerogative, but I tend to find that they don’t always translate all that well into fic. But if you’re looking for a challenge, or find it works better for you, then by all means go for it! These are just suggestions of what I do and what I’ve used to try and improve my writing. 

This sort of ties back in with the first, but read a lot and write a lot. This goes for all forms of writing; if you want to feel like you’ve got a good grasp on dialogue, on description, on adding enough details, write what makes you happy, and read what makes you excited to write. Don’t feel like you have to get bogged down in the language, or that you have to follow everything that’s been written before to the letter; if you don’t like harsh words and would prefer something less intense than ‘cock’ or ‘cunt’ or the like, by all means use whatever makes you feel most comfortable! Some people, myself included, feel a serious thrill whenever it’s written out or we read it, but if it’s not you then don’t worry about it =] you’re doing this for you, not for anyone else, so always keep it in mind when you’re working that as long as you are eventually happy with it, it’s always more than good enough. And if you’re not then pick out something you’d like to improve on and experiment! You’ll never know what you like if you don’t try it out, know what I mean? I look back at some of my old smut and cringe because I find it absolutely terrible, but I learned, and I adapted, found what suited me, and though I’m still learning and working on getting better I like to think I’ve improved since then. 

Last bit of advice, and you’re already ahead of the curve here =], never be afraid to ask for help. Everyone started out not knowing what it was we’re doing, looking to something else for guidance or suggestions or ideas, and writing NSFW/Smut is definitely no different. Seek out a Beta reader with experience in what you’re looking to write, someone who gets excited by the same things you do, and run your ideas and your writing by them! You provide them with fic that gets them pumped, they provide you with insight and tips--it’s a win win =] 

Also, always keep in mind that though it may sound boring, or not right to you, it’s because you already know what it is that’s happening in the fic, what’s going to happen, how it all ties back together. For someone else, reading an author’s work for the first time is rarely ever boring because we get so caught up in the newness of it all, the excellent, exciting writing, that it doesn’t ever feel boring =] so please don’t think you’re not a good writer because of that. You are, and you’re on the way to becoming even better.
