Between 27 October and 4 November 1937, the NKVD shot 1111 prisoners of the Solovetsky camp in the Sandarmokh tract. More than two hundred of them were Ukrainians. The victims were figures in politics, science, culture, art, and education. However, the liquidation did not end there - mass executions were carried out three more times over the following months.
The place of execution was discovered only 60 years later. In total, according to currently known data, between August 1937 and December 1938, more than 9,500 people of 58 nationalities were shot and buried there. The names of 1,116 prisoners have been established for certain. These mass executions were timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the so-called October Revolution. 1,111 of them were killed by a shot to the back of the head by russian state security captain Mikhail Matveyev.
