The Solway Coast at Crosscanonby, Cumbria.
It was along this beautiful stretch of coast that the Romans required a different strategy to wall building. Faced with a changing coast line and structures being lost to the sea, they built wooden milefortlets and created a vallum but made their defences more temporary. Their tactic was to watch the coastline down along the coast of Cumbria for attackers from across the Solway.
