Description: Our sense faculties and movement possibilities attune to our feeling states. At times, the somatic work will activate certain states, colors, moods. At other times, we simply allow the interior landscape to grow and physically manifest. We sculpt the manifestation. We play. This workshop is suitable for both the experienced improvisor and the beginner. Shinichi Iova-Koga is the Artistic Director of the Physical Theater and Dance company called inkBoat. The company has won five Izzie awards and toured in Europe, Asia and the USA. Long-term collaborations with Anna Halprin, Ko Murobushi, KT Nelson, Yuko Kaseki, Do Theater, Ann Carlson and Yumiko Yoshioka as well as mentorships with Ralph Lemon and Ruth Zaporah have shaped his perceptions and aesthetic. Shinichi has existed and trained primarily within the contexts of Qi Gong, Action Theater, Improvisation, Aikido, Butoh Dance and Noguchi Taiso. These perspectives formed his approaches to body mobility and circulation, awareness of weight, breath, physical connectivity, feeling states and relationship to the environment. As a teacher and as a maker of performances, he subjects his own experience to re-consideration or re-assembly in order to excavate principles from within the forms. He is certified to teach Qi Gong by Lotus Nei Gong and operates the Swiss branch of Wudang West. He teaches both independent workshops and within University dance programs, most notably at Mills College in California from 2009-2017.
