Any regrets about anything in the story so far?
Most of the time regrets aren't a big issue when it comes to things like my stories, because if I want to change something I just plain go back and do it. I'm the boss, I can change things if and when I want to.
And technically that IS what I did when I went back and edited a couple of the episodes after my hiatus, when I replaced the Council with the Governor so that the Council would come about as a result of the White Comet. After having had a few months off to reflect on the story as it currently stood, I realized that I'd just taken the notion of Echidnaopolis being run by a Council as a given, instead of considering the fact that this story is set SO far back in time that such a governing body might not have been formed yet. Once that epiphany hit me, I realized that it made a shitton of sense for the Council to form as a way of ensuring that multiple voices get heard should another major emergency arise. I'm not usually one to do major retcons like that (rest assured that I've gone back and tweaked old eps as new things cross my mind before, just on a much smaller scale), but this issue just seemed WAY too critical for me to ignore, and the idea of knowingly telling an inferior story is unacceptable to me. So, I went back and adjusted two prior eps to have Kayla and Jarvis duking it out with the Governor instead.
However, I still have regrets in this regard, because I would've preferred to give the Governor an actual characterization instead of just a title and a bad attitude. The main reason I didn't was because this was a BIG retcon and I couldn't ensure that everyone was going to go back and get on the same page. That means that, as the story moves forward, there's a potential for new readers (or even old ones that just didn't catch the update) to come across a new character that, in their eyes, has no lead-in. By leaving the Governor as more of a stand-in for a normal character, it allows anyone who missed the memo to keep up with the rest, because we all know at a glance who a governor is and what they do. This is also why the prose is VERY careful to dance around every needing to refer to the Governor with a pronoun; I was trying VERY VERY HARD to avoid characterizing this person, because if I were to put in anything more than was necessary to move the plot forward, then it's not a matter of the Governor not being characterized, it's a matter of the Governor being poorly characterized.
WITH THAT SAID... It's still not what I want. What I plan to eventually do (probably before these stories eventually migrate to AO3) is develop the Governor into an actual character, BUT it's not just going to be an OC character; what I ultimately intend to do is research echidna characters from other continuities that can be adapted into the role in BH:O. I don't know what it is, but the idea of making up the Governor from scratch just gives me an unsettled feeling? Creating a new character and then putting them in a position of power just feels wrong. I'm not opposed to adding OCs to these stories, as evidenced by the fact that Thunderhawk has two sisters (and there will be more OCs in upcoming episodes as well); the difference is that they're on a level playing field with the others, so it doesn't feel quite so... I don't know, conceited? That's why I would most prefer to adapt someone from another continuity. It's not me throwing a fancharacter into a position of power, it's a further appreciation for the Sonic fandom and a little Easter egg for anyone that picks up on the reference.
