Hilariously, I bought both secret of the swamp and tangle tower the literal day before mermaid mask dropped despite literally never touching the series at all beyond watching the promotion reels for mermaid mask. I played em both back to back through the night until it was literally noon the next day, took a 2 hour power nap, then bought and played mermaid mask for the next two days (I did actually sleep between those two tho).
I then played the flash game like two days after finishing mermaid mask.

Anyways so, spoilers for all the Detective Grimoire games 💥
Secret of the swamp was very nostalgic to me, largely due to how flash gamey it felt. Especially the audio mixing. I definitely prefer the newer game's art direction and...general everything but secret of the swamp's animation was very charming to me and I kinda wish they kept some of Sally and Grim's old poses. I also grieve the loss of the integrated animated cutscenes those were actually so cool I'm glad they got brought back somewhat at the end of Mermaid Mask, although I wish we got to see Grimoire interact with the environment like he used to.
In terms of story, secret of the swamp is noticably less strong than it's sequels. Like the main evidence for boggy being the killer was the webbed footprints and you find the fake webbed feet literally inches from the crime scene as one of the first clues you pick up like cmon now NSNDNKSW.
Idk about anyone else but it was also pretty obvious to me that Echo was the killer after talking with him for like 30 seconds 😭. I legit clocked it so fast I ended up with the achievement for having full suspicion on the culprit and no one else SNNDJDJDJE. BOGGY BEING IN THE TREE THO, I DID NOT EXPECT, LEGIT SHOCKED ME 😭😭😭.
Despite it being a tad dated I genuinely did enjoy it when I played it and I should rly replay it again. I definitely think it's still required viewing if you wanna enjoy the series to its fullest capacity even if it's a little different.
Tangle Tower was an insane step up in terms of, basically everything. All the issues I have with it I only rly have in hindsight after playing mermaid mask. Like, I think basically everyone, my biggest issue is with the pacing/logistics of the ending and Penny's motivation. (Literally what reason did she have to have you tie her up and monologue allat.)
This is kind of an elaborate solution but bare with me ANSNS. I feel like instead of making Sally and Grim tie her up Penny should have held Grim and Sally at crossbow point like in the first draft. I also think she should have been killing time monologuing for some actual reason.
Like maybe the beetle has a strong poisonous bite or spits acid that can cut through gloves and the only way to hold it without dying is for it to exhaust itself by doing its screech thing but the screech thing has a very long cool down period and Penny is monologuing to give the beetle the extra few minutes it needs to charge up the screech so she can set it off and safely move it. That alone would have fixed the vast majority of my issues with the ending ANSNSNJSHJS. Penny being just, a tad more crazy and unhinged also woulda helped.
Also the random unrelated loose ends throughout it were just kinda weird. Like why did Poppy not wanna look all bright pink anymore? Wtf happened to that Inkdip bird? What the hell kinda beef happened between Poppy and Fifi that made em all weird about eachother? Just small shit that was heavily emphasized by the story but we never got a clear answer on.
On a lighter note the characters in tangle tower were very silly I like em :). My favorite was Hawkshaw :D. Her dynamic with Grim was incredibly fun. You can imagine my horror upon learning she wasn't real :(.
The same voice actor voicing Hawkshaw and Penny was some Hamilton level cinematic double casting tho, that was awesome HSHDHJS. The basement sequences were ominous as fuck. And that fuckass bitchass bird of Penny's scared the actual hell out of me.
Overall I rly liked it I just wish I liked it more y'know 😭. Mermaid Mask just improves and overshadows it in nearly every way to me it's unbelievable.

Okay so when it comes to The Flash Game ....it doesn't hold a candle to basically any other entry 😭. I mean it's kinda a given but like BDNDNKSJS.
Having a Grimoire game set in a circus is a very neat idea, I think there's a lot you can do with it, the flash game just doesn't execute it well SJDJJDJE. Just like Secret of the swamp I clocked the killer being the mechanic basically immediately, his plan did not make much sense ngl. Very turnabout bigtop vibes just leagues less frustrating.
Ever since I finished it tho I've been thinking about redesigning and rewriting it into like an episode zero of sorts. Like rewrite it to be Grimoire's first ever case and what gave him his reputation and all that jazz. Perhaps one day I'll get to it :').

“ive seen people talk a lot about the sa implications in svsss , majoring usually on shen jiu( not that thats a bad thing btw, bery happy ppl realise this since it genuinely is a rlly read between the lines thing but if u see it its obv . Also theres never enough rep of sa victims, regardless of gender) But theres close to absolute 0 ive seen abt the ones against shen yuan!! Hes literally been assaulted MULTIPLE TIMES throughout the whole story, and not just by one person! Its not even implied its in your face btw.
1st - skinner incident : being stripped naked from head to torso unwillingly then touched , forcefully!
2nd- im pretty damn sure seing a bunch of naked succubi without consent is considered harrasment
3rd- harrassed in the water prison, got his clothes ripped off - mostly systems fault. not rly sexually but he was still harrassed .
4th- Binghes dream realm , being kissed against his will . yes yes binghe didnt know he was real but if anyone was showing clear resistance towards attempts , you back off. ( no hate to binghe btw , hes been violated himself )
5th - lastly maigu ridge . people do talk abt this but not enough guys ! This was violating for both of them and people either say binghe sad sqq or vice versa when it was none of their faults exceot xin mos!!
6th - bingge. Little shit was the absolute worst! I do love his character but him takinv advantage of shen yuan rly had me nauseous. he was fully set on papapa ing with shen yuan to show hes better but not thinking to ask for consent .
So many sa/harrasment implications theough out the story and people gloss over that as well as the fact that sy does not have a healthy way of coping either but nobody talks abt that either? They take him as a joke when he was 19-20 just reading webnovels when suddenly he dies , ripped away from everyone he loves in a completely new setting into the body of a man who will be the most heavily tortured in the story . He chooses to repress his feelings or cope theough humour but guys hes so fucked up give him therapy . And its not just shen yuan. Like what about bingge , who definitely did not learn being a graper from the washerwoman? It was qin wanyu ( im oretty sure. The girl who had the “honour “ to take his virginity ) was the one who had graped him and he just thought thats the way it goes since he inevitably “enjoyed” the encounter too . Every single charactee in this book has had some fuuked up shit happen to them . Yqg my baby def did dubious shit dueing his slave boy days to keep xiao jiu frm harm too, since it was common that time. Its not said so, but theres like 3% chance that hasnt happened.
sa doesnt mean grape . If its assault that occurred with sexual intent its sa! thats what happened with sj. He may be a virgin but that doesnt mean he hasnt been assaulted ! but just as people realise that with sj and see how hes a broken child , people should realise that with shen yuan , also a broken child ( basically he was a child . 20 isnt a big adult age ) and a broken man , assaukted and harrased , coping with humour so as not to think too much abt what happened to him ! Ok so im not surprised they did the post-ark fakeout (I called the possibility last week !) However I *am* surprised they did it alongside so many volume 10 references. Like, for all intents and purposes, this was setting everything up (mostly) how it did in the manga. Minus Chapel lol. The "i have a friend now" the "I'm nicholas' friend" the Melanie chiding Wolfwood for taking everything onto himself while he's bleeding out. The LR blood stuff is new, but it makes sense on the context of the vials + LR just having that in their bloodstream for the automatic healing. The no Chapel stuff is very different & definitely changes a lot of the context with Razlo. Will we get to see more of that later? Or will that be the extent of it? We'll find out, I suppose.
The fakeout just about killed me lmfaooooo. So genuinely funny. Wolfwood momence fr. He didnt need to do that 😂😂😂 BUT getting to see Vash holding his hand like that... 😭😭😭 never thought id get to see it. This episode rly did have a lot of moments for vashwood nation for real. Were they fully earned by the story? Shrug. But if you work under the assumption that there were a lot of bonding moments in between it all (the limited episode number restricts the ability to show these by a Lot) then like. I dont think it's all that out of place. Also Wolfwood having those damn flashbacks to Vash as he was bleeding out & it helping him realize how much he Cares About Him....... gah .
No "I wanted to spend my tomorrows with him". We got confetti, but only as a fakeout. Will it return? But as actual confetti as the kids are leaving? Could Wolfwood still die? His was a relatively slow death in the manga. Enough time to see everyone off and then go have one final drink with Vash. And then the confetti was the actual kids releasing it to "welcome" him back. It could all still happen. He could still die next episode. And tbh the more I think about it, the more likely it feels to me.
But at the same time, what if he didnt die? If he survived & had to live in a severely aged body? Hair Greyed and everything. How much longer would he even have to live? Not nearly as much as he'd naturally have. Nowhere near it. So even if he does somehow survive to the end of the series, I just don't think he's going to live that long overall. But who knows. There's a lot that's up in the air still.
& the other major thing to think about is everything with LR. The Livio talking to Razlo moment was... a little bit weird, I will not lie. Also genuinely pretty funny how Livio was acting all ikemen about it. Like. Bro why are you all handsome-faced right now. You're a nerd of a guy, stop trying to act cool. But the switching between them like that is like. Well. Not quite how DID works IRL, as far as I'm aware. But it's also fiction, so that's to be expected to some extent. I don't think it's all that far off from how they were portrayed in the manga. It just had them speaking out loud instead of in their thoughts, evidently for the drama of it. They made it sound like Razlo was going away, but to be fair they did that in the manga too & he still came back to help Livio. So my hope is that it's a similar thing here, especially with how Livio had a moment of sympathizing with him here (apologizing for making him take all the pain, if I remember right), so. There's some hope. We'll just have to see how it goes.
Also Vash summoning his wing....heheheh... the first time he's done this fully by choice, it seems. Each time before this (all... two times, I think?) It was due to someone else's influence. But now he brought it out himself. Will he be able to control it better now, like in the manga? We Will See...

Also this face?!?!?! When Vash came at the last second to protect the kids & Melanie?!?!?! It killed me!!!! It looks so VULNERABLE on him!!!!! Also the fact that he went nearly this whole fight with no sunglasses on after spending the Entire series before this Stubbornly keeping them on (trying to keep up a veneer of acting like he didnt care. But really, he cares so much). It just really did hit. God. We can finally see his eyes. After he hid them this whole time, we can See Them... gah 😭😭😭
i wanna be so clear up front that i like the game (damn i hope i do given i've got 140 hours in already, 110 of those from early access) and i don't *hate* the ending, but even if i did, it wouldn't take away from the genuinely rly awesome incredible gameplay. hades 2 is a REALLY fun game to play, and that's a huge success entirely on its own.

one of these days i'm gonna do a run from the beginning and the story will absolutely feel different bc, y'know, there won't be the forced pauses and weird stops that exist during early access. and i am totally ready for some of my feelings of Wow The Pacing Seems Weird to be heavily affected by all my time from early access.
That Said.
the pacing of the narrative resolution is rushed and i don't think i'm going to change my mind on that. i don't have a single problem with zagreus going against melinoe's wishes. his actions are SO in character, and i do think they're foreshadowed plenty by his dialogue. i don't even have a problem with chronos doing a turn after getting all messed up emotionally with the memory of an alternate life where he watched mel grow up and learned to be part of a family (and on god there is some juicy stuff there with zagreus and chronos both remembering it and therefore forever being apart from the rest of their family in this one particular way and i will gladly sink my teeth into that)
all that is fine. i kinda love having chronos be "defeated" less by the power of love than by the psychological weight of a better, happier life.
it's the *response* that i have a problem with. at first melinoe is genuinely angry with zagreus, and that was great! that was awesome! and he came right back at her with okay well you didn't explain much of anything at all and also killing chronos won't solve our family's issues (He's Right), and hades stops that argument in the moment which is fine but then they just.........don't ever come back around to it. all of that tension gets handwaved away.
and there's barely any tension between chronos and melinoe once they start interacting? i don't mind (much) that chronos is affectionate with her, but i want mel to be more bothered. i want it to be more than just slightly stiff and awkward.
and none of this is even MENTIONING how much the olympus side wasn't rly....much of anything, narratively speaking. would've been pretty cool to dive deeper into the "hey this family is pretty messed up and we're barely holding together even with a shared goal" thing that's brought up multiple times.
it's also a little wild to me that there isn't more addressing of how it's actually probably for the best that zag+mel didn't outright Kill chronos bc the olympian gods (some more than others) definitely would've viewed that differently than killing typhon. i can see Huge potential for the olympians eventually deciding that maybe the Unseen are too big a threat if they can just kill immortals whenever. nemesis kind of addresses this after mel kills typhon, and i liked that part.
on the subject of "ways to make the narrative decisions make more sense", the justification they use for why the core gameplay loop is still the same is........i'm gonna say clunky. unclear. it's another one of the things that's too rushed. i keep thinking of possible alternative explanations while i play the game
i.e., the reason mel is going through alt timelines could be bc chronos was trying to pull from multiple timelines at once in order to cement his place, and now they have to close up all those rifts.
i also don't feel like "hades just really wants to make sure the underworld is all good but also we can't actually fix it bc chronos and mel are doing this project for maybe eternity and in the meantime mortals just don't get to enter the underworld" is adequately justified?? that's kind of a huge deal??
it was always going to be hard to tie up smth with stakes this huge, esp in a way that allows for the gameplay loop to continue. i can respect and appreciate that.
i am also disappointed in the way they tied it up. i think they could've done smth better. ultimately, i think one of the strengths of hades 1 is that the stakes weren't actually very high. it was about interpersonal relationships. one guy's fight for his family to just fucking talk about their issues. (which is smth that could've gotten mirrored in hades 2, but i digress)
it's harder to pull off the success of hades 1 when you're working with such drastically bigger stakes. and well, it's not like the narrative in hades 1 was perfect, either.
again, i like the game and i don't hate the story. i hope that i warm up to it more as time goes on. i write this all out mostly for the sake of looking back and, best case scenario, being able to disagree with my own critiques. even if not, it's nice to put thoughts to text.
(also, wrt to the epilogue and what you find out about hecate: i can accept that there's ways it makes sense and isn't *totally* out of left field or at least has supporting details, but overall i don't think it was necessary and imo weakens the character and her relationship w/ melinoe. that kind of character choice is always gonna be controversial and land for some folks better than others, i think. i don't Hate it. i also don't rly Like it. and that's a p solid summation of my thoughts on the hades 2 ending as a whole!)

like, crofty for example has literally said that the whole 'cursing in the stewards room' apparently wasn't true? max also said he didn't threaten to kill him (or at least didn't say it like that) and that thing with max saying he was gonna let him through anyway? idk but i really struggle to believe that.

Realistically I could analyse all the things that George said that weren't true or were out of line because there definitely were but there are 2 reasons I usually don't
George after Max's outburst in the stewards' didn't bring it up to the media and was trying to be friendly with Max the day of the race. Now whether this was genuine or just an attempt at mind-games on his end is up to interpretation but the point is George was not going to take it up with the media and what prompted his Abu Dhabi speech was Max's media rounds after the Qatar race. I focus on Max's mostly because the picture that is being painted by people fully taking Max's side is that George was a backstabbing snake for his speech, and entirely failing to mention that is was Max who made their fight a media affair in the first place. So I am not saying that everything George said was true but rather that he had every right in the world to be upset with what Max did and that planning to strike back is an understandable if not a reasonable reaction. And also, the narrative people are trying to paint this situation with being entirely wrong.
George gets already a disproportionate amount of hate online and by Max fans with no reading comprehension, which I do not plan on adding to. Of course RPF is all in good fun but when it is about people's reputations and with someone as widely disliked as George, I prefer to tell his side of the story when there are so many people already telling Max's.
I of course don't take sides and their drama entertains me but Max has a lot more social leverage and so do his fans and while I would like to clown on George for going on a true crime rant and rehearsing it in the shower I really don't feel good doing it on a public account when so many people blindly believe Max's side of the story which is something he came up with while entirely blinded by rage and has not brought up again since. At the end of the day, barely anyone took George's speech seriously and even most staunch GR defenders will admit it made him look a bit silly, but a concerning number of people took Max's words at face value which is what matters to me when talking about this, because they shouldn't.
If I say the words "stop taking George seriously" most George fans will go "well duh" and I therefore don't rly feel a need to address them
Doesn't matter to me who I am a fan of (ofc I like them both but Max is my Guy my love etc etc.) when the read that the majority has on a situation is unfairly damaging to a person's reputation I am not going to take any risks reinforcing that read even if I like the other guy more. Besides, Max did kind of Lose His Mind in qatar and I love him for his wrongs as well but that was very definitely a wrong and I have no problem admitting that.

bro i rly would recommend xlife because. okay i know it can feel a bit rough bc its on the older side but you have to understand. holds your shoulders. its jimmys first time interacting with the majority of these people and you can FEEL it and because of that some dynamics arent quite established whilst others find their feet so quickly you get some insane foreshadowing (the FH foreshadowing goes CRAZY).
generally, joel is so mean lol. esp because quite a few of his early interactions w jim are with fwhip, WHO IS SO MEAN, joel very much leans on the bullying of jim, more than you would ever see in modern smallidarity. one of the first things he ever says to jim is "broken (about . i dont even remember what. a build probably), like you" and jim just fucking. agrees??? and goes "like me"?????????????? DOG?
AND THEN . when fucking joel makes his jeremyism cult jimmy is like the first to join and he wholeheartedly dedicates himself to it its literally his reason to live even though no one else treats him any better from it lmfao. and when scott takes over the cult and basically destroys it it leaves jimmy with, i quote, "nothing else to live for" and he fuckin kills himself???????????????????????????????????????????????????? I think it also might be that all these individuals, although practically every protagonist in fantasy media has the whole "everything's riding on you" thing going on, they have the screws EXTRA tight. Aang has to manage both physical world politics AND spirit world. Asgore LIT-ER-ALL-Y has to act or people in the trapped circumstances start DYING of DEPRESSION which is a uniquely positioned psychological horror. Wait a sec. He has THAT in common with Caine. Eerie.
(Po is more of an outlier in that regard, his story is pretty standard "villain will take over the world if you don't" fare. But then again. My hyperfixation on him wasn't as strong. So. lol.)

I’ve drawn Caine a handful of times, which may not seem like a lot, however, he broke through a MAJOR art doldrums, so it’s extremely significant. I’m still trying to convince myself to further develop some sketches I have lying around. Nobody’s taken interest in the ones I’ve posted so far so kinda discouraging.
Asgore spawned a whole-ass story that I intend to develop into its own novel eventually.
Po inspired one of the only filk songs (fanmade songs) I’ve ever written and sung.
I think I did at least one character-voice-acting "cover" song for Asgore on SoundCloud
(amongst the more fun characters to voice. I did one Aang "cover" song too recently, not when the fandom was active. It's here on Tumblr.)
But that means that all of them are almost the only characters who elicited that benchmark. Or at least the only fandoms that did.
And unfortunately TADC fans, I still have not posted alllllll the content on my phone to SoundCloud yet, either. Most of the #Stella Sings tag is dedicated to Caine, but I've done other TADC characters too!!
Aang did not get his ‘own’ story so much as got rly focused on in a Gaang one. I have a OneShot on my Tumblr that I developed from that story, too. I’ve penned a couple metas defending him and bringing home just how crazy his situation is.
My intended loooongform comic about the UT characters also was essentially a defense of Asgore. I have a short shareable Google Doc on the core of the idea.
(Oh I guess as an aside, I should briefly mention that Barbara Rose’s quandary about beastmen also fits the theme of rescuing large groups of people from an impending self-generated status effect. But she ain’t a goof nor all-powerful, her all-powerful companion, too, is stodgy like she is. Which. Is the other side of my brain.)
But NOTHING compares to the amount of meta I’ve done defending Caine. (He and Asgore have in common that they are both well-meaning antagonists) I’ve never analyzed a piece of media out loud so much in my LIFE, god d%#m. I wrote like. //one// meta about this show on Jax’s arc (not a defense)(but could be a video essay) and some micro metas about Ragatha, but Caine. Whew. Caine has spawned 6 OneShots and counting, plus like 4 or 5 ideas for longform fic. I have an extensive Doc on comic ideas for him, post ep 7. I expect that he will eventually invoke poetry like my discussion between Toriel and Flowey did. (sample available btw) I’ve already written Caine two and a half filk, ie fansongs (in my Pinned Post on my sideblog dedicated to him). He has completely taken over my brain. I’ve also done more than a dozen voice-acting recordings for him, some of them songs (again posted under the tag “Stella sings”) and some of them lines. I can only post a limited # of them on Tumblr tho, Discord enables sharing the rest much more easily.
Unfortunately, my Caine-like tendencies have also led to friction on Discord, soooo having a place where I can even chat about him has been hampered. :[
