I have seen a lot of people posting lately that they worry they are getting too old to accomplish their goals...TIME FOR A STORY!

I went out with the potential grad students and our grad advisor for dinner last night and our grad advisor was telling a story about the first big conference he went to right after he was awarded his PhD. There was another person in the same session who had also just been awarded their PhD. This person was 85 years old. They decided it in their 80s it was time to get back to school and get their PhD.

So. The takeaway - it is never too late to do what you want to do and it is possible you will do one thing for a while and then move on to something completely new. This is coming from a ‘non-traditional’ grad student because I didn’t finish my undergrad at 22. I had a crisis in my third year and quit school. I worked at Barnes & Noble and taught preschool for 3 years before I went back. I completely changed my focus (from classics to astrophysics) and I ended up graduating with honors with THREE undergrad degrees. Due to cost I was only able to apply to 2 PhD programs my first time around and didn’t get into either. So I got my Masters in Physics. And then I applied for PhD programs again and now I am finishing my first year as a PhD student (although technically not a PhD candidate until I pass the qualifying exam next year). So just keep doing what you are doing, keeping your eye on the prize, know what you are about and things will work out! And I super believe in you!
