Vincente Minnelli - Some Came Running (1958) An all star cast of people you usually associate with lighter films, bring this quite dour story to life. You get Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Shirley MacLaine in the leading roles and you would associate them with musicals or lighter fare (Martin and MacLaine starred together in Artists and Models with Jerry Lewis, after all). However, this is an adaptation of a novel by the same author of From Here To Eternity, so it isn't really a barrel of laughs. Sinatra plays a pretty shitty character, even if he is ostensibly the film's protagonist, an embittered veteran coming home after the War, he also clearly has had some talent as a writer. He pretty much hates his brother and remaining family, with good reason, and turns to drink and gambling where he meets Dean Martin who's a professional gambler. Sinatra is also pretty handsy with women who do not want to be with him and really shitty to women who do love him. Shirley MacLaine is the real highlight here as the "bimbo with a heart of gold", chasing after Sinatra who she sees as unattainable being cultured and smart, none of which she is. Even if her character is kind of a stereotype her feelings are often quite beautiful and she truly loves Sinatra's character. She is also pretty much out-acting anyone else in the film, in the end she makes a character that could easily be annoying and unbearable into a deeply sympathetic and tragic character. The film is slightly over-bloated, and the story takes a long time to get anywhere, but it's worth seeing for MacLaine's expressive portrayal.
