For H. P. Lovecraft cats were the most noble of beasts. His essay "SOMETHING ABOUT CATS" was a delineation of his love and respect for the species. Cats were sleek, independent, aloof, graceful, and perhaps gifted with senses approaching the 'supernatural'. No doubt Lovecraft's experience with his own beloved pet cat in childhood had a lot to do with his affection for the creatures. Cats were the ladies and gentlemen of lifeforms. Being a gentleman was always Lovecraft's goal. His friends told stories of the efforts he made to befriend even the most wild of cats wherever he lived. Robert Barlow called his interaction with cats "orgasmic"! Others said that Lovecraft would fail to move for hours if a cat fell asleep in his lap. His wife Sonia Green was said to have stated (perhaps with more than a little jealousy), "He'd rather take a cat to bed!" The paintings below were originally the works of artist Lucia Heffernan.
