Graphic novel: "We Could Be Magic"
I actually read this the day after getting back from a Disneyland trip, and can't help but think that is the IDEAL experience. Right before or right after.
Tabitha Laurie has wanted to be a princess at Sommerland ever since a childhood visit with her father, shortly after her parents told her they were getting divorced. And now's her chance! She's landed a job in the summer work program, and is determined to prove herself worth of a crown! Except...she's nervous. She can't dance. And, well...she doesn't look like any of the princesses.
A story of determination, facing off against bigotry, taking risks, and making people SEE you for all you are. Plus a delightful romance thrown in (with a bisexual love interest, and LOTS of queer secondary characters)! This is an homage to Disney, but certainly a much kinder Disney than ever was. I want to go to Sommerland.
