♒ to learn about my character’s childhood
in many ways, hyesoo’s early childhood was rather boring. growing up on her grandparent’s ranch meant that when she wasn’t in school, she was more than likely helping around, either tending to the farm animals and crops or helping her grandmother with housework indoors. due to the recklessness of her parents and the way that word travels quickly in small towns, hyesoo was teased and ostracized by some of her classmates, but it never got under her skin as much as it could have. the small group of friends that she had growing up was solid, and her sister was quick to defend her from childhood bullies. she’ll talk about these years more than anything else, in a peacefully nostalgic manner.
moving to seoul at twelve was a shock, but easily the most defining period of her life. it brought her closer to her sister, but at the same time, truly opened her eyes to her sister’s thoughtless and manipulative ways. despite the fact that she was just a child and her sister was an adult, she was often the one caring for and keeping track of hyebin, along with caring for herself. food was scarce, they moved around from apartment to apartment, and for the first time, hyesoo was homesick. but on the other hand, she found her interest in music, began training, and discovered that her intelligence was more than just her having the potential to make it outside of joam.
as heartbreaking as it was to be separated from her sister during her time training at megamusic, it was also the beginning of hyesoo’s freedom and uprising. being alone caused her to work harder than ever, catching the attention of her superiors and giving her the proper support system that she needed to become the woman she is today.
