It can sometimes be a little too much for me to handle, especially in the way it mirrored the rise of the current political climate, the people who justify the Empire or who say both sides are bad, the way that it mirrors how it's deliberately targeting these worlds/people, how it rewards the worst behavior, how the Empire treats aliens, how the Empire treats nature preservations, how of course it's not 1:1 but that there's a lot of REALLY SALIENT parallels there.

It's not 1:1, but at times it gets really close, and like.. that is a super understandable reaction? It's why some of my friends have told me they are holding off on reading any of the new canon stuff. 

It's fully a double edged sword. On one hand the Empire is exactly what a fascist government is, and we get the satisfaction of watching people tear it down and expose it for the ill functioning nightmare that it is.... but on the other you wind up with a reminder of what you are trying to escape right there in your escapist fantasy.

I know for me having the Empire be so connected to things in this way makes the fantasy of destroying it sweeter, and the story of its rise more fascinating - but I also know that not everyone reacts like that, hell even I don’t respond like that all the time - sometimes the intense similarity between the Empire and the US is just depressing.

Like I really hear you on sometimes just wanting to say "The Empire is Bad" and leaving it at that.

Most of the time I feel like "UGH I CANNOT DEAL WITH HOW AWFUL THE EMPIRE IS" but every so often I also feel like screaming at the top of my lungs about how awful they are in SO MANY WAYS.

I have been so pleased with how canon has been addressing what the Empire is, and how it functions politically.

It really feels like a great tribute to how much the Prequels were about the Bush era tbh.

But it also just makes sense? Because of course the Empire functions the way it does.

Like of course Palpatine did all the shit he did in Catalyst. 

He would redact all environmental protections, both stripping every specially preserved environment of their status and destroying all restrictions on businesses.

Of course one of the intents behind this was to destroy peoples he did not like (specifically Indigenous peoples).

This is exactly how a government that thinks destroying planets is a good idea would get its start, but gosh does it ever work as commentary as well.

S A M E to all of this!! But also it reminds me that I am so sad that Shadow of Vader isn't happening apparently at all because it sounded like it was just the thing to continue on these feelings after Gillen and Soule (and, possibly, Kemp, since I've liked what I've read of his book so far) really got me invested in this era. I mean, MAYBE Vader Immortal might have a strong story to it, I'm certainly willing to take whatever they give us, but I'm going to be so sad when this series is over, even if it's probably smart to end it where they do.

Ugh I am sooooo upset that we’re not getting any of the Shadow of Vader comic. The little we were told about it sounded like exactly the sort of thing I adore most.

That said, I really want to try and be optimistic about it, and considering that the problem here was fully with Marvel and that Lucasfilm and Del Rey are both still cool with him, maybe the sudden disappearance of the series outright means he is maintaining ownership of his ideas and developing them for another format? (I’d really hate to think the series just vanished outright)

As for Vader Immortal, as much as I love love love love the one Star Wars VR game native to the VR headset I own (VR X-Wings!), and the handful of VR videos ILMxLab has shared for any VR user to access on the VR version of YouTube (both canon shorts and the amazing one where you get to watch them film a scene in Rogue One in VR), I hate so much that every Star Wars VR game that is for home release is native to only one system and one system alone. I totally get that since that is the case they have evenly distribute them across systems, but it is sooo frustrating. The VR headset I have wasn’t cheap, and if I want to play Vader Immortal, I have to buy a completely different headset and system. Which obviously I am not going to do! Ugh. So frustrating.

As for Dark Lord of the Sith... honestly the last issue was the strongest of the series yet, so I am going to withhold judgement of if it was a good place to end things or not until we actually get this one last issue. I am however very curious about Soule’s next project for Star Wars, and when they are going to announce it (have they announced which comic authors are coming to SWCC? I know they announced which book authors are, but that is all I’ve heard).

All of this said, they did announce a new Vader limited series just today. Star Wars: Vader - Dark Visions. It will be starting in March, and features a creative team of Dennis Hopeless writing and Paolo Villanelli and Brian Level doing the art.

The summary so far has me kinda... meh? Especially since everyone knows this is a replacement for Shadow of Vader, you’d think they would have at least tried to hook you with the description.

Surprisingly It wasn’t mentioned at all on today’s Star Wars show, probably because they announced the next book in Zahn’s Thrawn series (which is somehow is set during Rebels and not after it?) and then had a genuinely wonderful segment where Pablo hosted a Star Wars Cosplay Masterpiece Theater so he could talk about something he loved in Wrestling history.

Also, I have no idea if this is connected to fandom in any way. The only fandom they have mentioned at all in their asks is one I am not a part of and have not been part of for many many many years (they seem to think “brony” is a slur? As if the problem people have/had with that segment of fandom was anything other than their extreme misogyny. It’s really extra silly and juvenelle tbh), so who even knows why this anon is so obsessed with me and specifically with sending me acephobic, transphobic and fatphobic anonymous messages (my “favorite” of the confusing nonsense messages they have sent me is the one that said that because I am on the ace spectrum, I am a danger to children. It really makes no sense at all in any way shape or form - everything they send is like a bigoted word salad to be honest).

If I didn't have 10 other things to do today, I would be doing NOTHING BUT CATCHING UP ON COMICS, I am so mad that I can't read this yet, because I know it's amazing!!! ALSO, QUESTION: I know I should finish Aftermath before picking up the Poe comics, but is it super necessary to read SW/DV before reading Aphra, if I know the general outline? (Ie, I've read their first meetings + I know she faked her death to escape him.)

I would def. at least finish the first Vader comic before starting Doctor Aphra.

Since it starts off with the same writer as the 2015 Vader comic, and a lot of the same characters, in a lot of way it can feel like a continuation of that comic. 

While I can see it easily working without the context of the Vader comic, many of the issues are best understood and enjoyed with the full context (plus I think you will enjoy that comic in general. There is some really interesting stuff in there, particularly questions around Vader and fatherhood).

As for the main Star Wars comic, there is a crossover event between it and Aphra pretty early on in Aphra’s run, but you can easily read the Aphra comic without really knowing anything about what is happening over in the main title. I mean you know Leia, Han, Luke, and Chewie so figuring out what is up with them when they show up isn’t that hard given the context of the crossover itself. I’d say if you are trying to get to Aphra without reading the main comic however to read the Rebel Jail arc, as well as issue #34 of the main comic.

I dunno though as I only know the context of having read all of both. If I have any followers who are reading Doctor Aphra and haven’t read either Darth Vader 2015 or the main Star Wars title, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this!

In lieu of not burning out over all the shitty IRL news, I AM GOING TO TALK ABOUT BOOKSHELVES FOR A MINUTE. I don't have any solid plans because I hadn't really thought much until about a week ago when I got sucked into book vlogging YouTube videos and bookshelf tours, because I don't really own many books anymore, I read everything digitally, even my comics I donated to the library. I have a small-ish shelf of manga, but even that's not full. My SW books are just kind of piled everywhere. What I really want is something aesthetically pleasing, I have a lot of books with gorgeous covers, so I'd probably wind up doing a lot of "pile of three books laying vertically, three books horizontal next to them, then stick a Funko on top of it" with the occasional front-facing book with an especially pretty cover. I mostly get reference books as physical copies, the novels I get digitally, so chronological order isn't an option. I'd probably group dictionaries together, though, etc. Canon together vs Legends together as well. All my toys would be ALL OVER the shelves, too. :D

Those plans sound waaaaaaay nicer and better thought out than my Star Wars Book situation. If/when you finish arranging things that way, I’d love to see a photo, because that really sounds like it will look amazing.

Way better than mine in any case.

For reference (and as part of my own attempt to not get stuck on the rl fandom stuff rn), here is what my dedicated Star Wars shelves look like right now (Please note that I am not done arranging my figures, and that the figures on these shelves are only a small portion of all the Star Wars figures and toys I have cluttering up my apartment. I kinda have a real problem when it comes to these things, a problem that isn’t helped by the fact I actually play with them so they often wind up not arranged how I’d like them to be). 

When I say my figures are making it impossible to actually see the books, I seriously mean that my figures are making it impossible to actually see the books.

I used to have all my Star Wars blurays up on that shelf that has the empty space Threepio and the Leia plush I got out of a crane machine at 6-flags are occupying, but I recently moved them to where all my other blurays are to make room for new reference books (such as the two I currently am looking through and therefore are not on the shelves - Women of the Galaxy and Scum and Villainy, and more to come in the future). I should also note the big ass case for the deluxe version of The Rebel Files is going to go on display on my desk once I finish cleaning that off.

Oh and while most of my Legends books are at my parents place in MA, here is the shelf where I keep the ones I have in my apartment:
