one of the most interesting things matt’s done with Cognouza by introducing individual members of the somnovum is to change our understanding of what this city even is
when all they had to go on was a nightmarish vision from a creature that was being hunted by it, it seemed pretty clear that this thing is evil
jester has been adamant, this whole time, that this thing is filled with hatred
and we get there and it turns out, hey some of the minds in here are filled with hatred, but some of them are just scared or confused or sad
and of course it’s still a nightmarish abomination that needs to be stopped, but it’s not trying to consume the world because it’s evil and it hates everything. it’s just that it’s now a living entity the size of a city and it’s hungry. and it should not exist, but now that it does, it’s not really evil of it to want to keep existing.
and there are, you know, thousands of minds in there that aren’t even doing or wanting anything, they’re just screaming in endless horrific psychic torment.
so like, we see enough of this to realize that, though it still definitely needs to be killed, it’s more of a “this is a rabid animal that needs to be put down now before it does any more damage” than a sense that “this thing is evil and needs to be punished”
so, of course, as soon as we realize that, lucien comes in with a bunch of psychic bombs to gloat about his secret plan for ultimate cosmic power and we go OH. OH THAT’S RIGHT. *THAT’S* WHAT EVIL LOOKS LIKE!
