I'm sorry just. Imagining Sonic thinking of Chip and pressing kisses to the earth when no one is around in hopes that Chip knows he's thinking about him.

Sonic keeping Chip's necklace in a locked drawer at Tails' house, stopping by every once in a while to hold it to his chest or nuzzle it with his cheeks or press it to his lips (or all three), pretending/hoping Chip can hear him as he holds it and talking about his adventures so Chip doesn't feel left out (wherever he is)

Alternatively, Sonic wearing the necklace on his wrist always. Sonic lying beside Tails on a grassy hill, talking about anything and everything as they relax, and occasionally talking to a third person who cannot be there and cannot answer (Sonic, including Chip even though he knows he's not physically there and cannot join in)

By god the idea of Sonic still casually being hung up on Chip post Unleashed makes me emotional

Acknowledging and defining the little buddy effect was a mistake because since then I have never known peace

I am seeing the little buddy effect EVERYWHERE

For the record, while I do ship at least a few of these I'm not claiming any specifically by making this post. Personally, if I had to boil my views on the little buddy effect and the characters involved in it (as with sontails), I'd say my thoughts are queerplatonic aligned rather than completely romantic or completely platonic. I just don't see any of these characters as siblings to each other is all. It's...complicated! And fun to dissect

With that being said, though, for the sake of any shippers out there I will be tagging all possible ships on this post.

I know that with the way the games are handled a lot of characters/concepts/objects kind of end up becoming one offs

But I like to imagine that Sonic practically never takes off Chip's necklace, that he wears it on his wrist nearly 99.99% of the time

I like to think that during the cooldown periods, when Sonic has more than a few moments to think, sometimes he'll think about Chip and his heart will squeeze. He knows everything had to happen the way it did, but that doesn't mean he doesn't miss Chip (his presence, his voice, their banter, just being together, etc). It doesn't mean he doesn't still feel a bit bitter and sad. It comforts him most days to know that Chip will always be with him, and in the earth he treads, but it's not always enough.

Sometimes I like to imagine Chip visiting Sonic in his dreams. Sonic doesn't know if it's really Chip or only a version conjured by his brain, but he ultimately doesn't care. Whether fake or real, it's nice to hang out with him, to talk to him, to make him smile. Sometimes he even tells Chip what he's been up to, digging for some praise and recognition from him (the kind he can't get by talking to the necklace or objects connected to Gaia's earth)

I like to imagine how terribly Sonic can miss Chip, even when he's living every day the way he normally would.
