Plot: She got her memories back but instead of getting answers, she had more questions and a new wave of emotions. How could she have forgotten about him?
Rating: PG-13 (Minor language, Mentions of manhandling minors by WICKED personnel, and flashbacks)
Characters: Sonya, Harriet, and mentions of Newt and other Group B members.
Notes: This idea has been on the back burner for some time – I knew I wanted explore Sonya’s thoughts and possible reaction upon receiving The Swipe and remembering Newt. Any names of the Group B characters (save for Miyoko) are fan made – I created them before The Fever Code came out. All events for Sonya’s time under WICKED’s care are fictional save for her final goodbye to her brother before being sent up into her Maze. All flashbacks of Harriet’s backstory are made up – not much has been confirmed about her past from Dashner. Cross posted to FanFiction.net.
“You okay Stick?” Harriet asked her, placing a hand on her shoulder.
Sonya jumped a little at the sudden contact and glanced up at the co-leader of Group B. She had been replaying several moments in her head – the final day at home, the lessons with the other girls, and the last time she saw him. From what she could recall, he wasn’t limping when he snuck in to visit her – maybe it was something those WICKED Sticks did to him. Maybe it was from the Maze.
“Do you…remember that Stick with the limp?” she asked Harriet, her voice trembling slightly.
Harriet scrunched up her nose and frowned as she tried to recall the Group A members. It wasn’t that Thomas Stick and definitely not the loudmouth Asian guy who wouldn’t shut his damn trap. Then she remembered the blonde with the funny accent and nodded. “Blonde, says “Bloody” a lot, and has an accent?”
Sonya nodded and Harriet frowned as she leaned against the adjacent wall.
“Yeah so? What about him? Did you know him before the Maze or something? Was he like your boyfriend?”
“No! Harri he, he was my brother,” Sonya managed to get out. “My older brother. The WICKED Sticks came for me one day and our parents fought them, but got killed. Newt wouldn’t let go of me, so they said take him too. Something about using him as a control or something.” She closed her eyes and sucked in a sharp breath of air.
“How could I forget him? My own brother? God, Harri I almost shot his dumb ass in the Scorch and I wouldn’t have remembered him!” Sonya dropped her head onto her knees and swallowed hard, trying to fight back a wave of tears threatening to spill out.
Harriet opened and closed her mouth, staring at the co-leader of Group B with concern. This revelation was heavy but expected as everyone seemed to be reeling in shock after undergoing a procedure called The Swipe back at the lab. The techs had reassured everyone that it was optional but most of the surviving members from Groups A and B had chosen to have it performed on them, save for Thomas, Minho, and Newt. Initially Harriet thought all three of the boys were being stupid for saying no but after having it done, she was starting to wonder if they were smarter for refusing. She bit back a terrifying image of her older sister showing early symptoms, including a vase that was thrown near her mother’s head during a tantrum.
“Do you think they knew? You think they hoped I’d kill my own brother?” Sonya asked.
Harriet bit her lip as she sank down to sit beside the ginger-haired girl. She leaned her head against the wall and shrugged. “Honestly Stick, I don’t know,” she confessed. “I know that Thomas guy was isolated for some time and they told us he was too sick. Turns out that was a lie ‘cause he was Immune like us.” She looked around the Berg, scanning the faces of their fellow Group B members.
Clara, their remaining Med-Jane, was nursing a cup of hot coffee in her hands, occasionally looking down at her mug then up. Her eyes met Harriet’s and the two exchanged an uneasy smile.
“What else did you remember about that Newt guy?” Harriet asked as she looked over at Jane, who was trying to fall asleep on Maria’s shoulder. The youngest member of Group B was quite a bit shorter than their Keeper of the Runners and was struggling to reach the elder’s shoulder comfortably. Maria huffed and slouched lower against the wall so Jane rest her head without straining. The former rolled her eyes and Harriet smiled, shaking her head at the pair.
“We lived in England, or well, what was left of it,” Sonya recalled. “My parents named me Elizabeth but to him I was Lizzy. Before they took us, it snowed for the first time in months. I don’t think we had been at school though – something tells me that our parents pulled us from school shortly after the flares.”
“How do you know?”
Sonya shrugged and scrunched her brows as she pictured the house she had been forced to leave. “The windows were boarded up,” she said. “We, I mean, me, Mom, Dad, and Newt were the only ones inside. We hardly left but I know there was enough food in the house to sustain us. No one came to visit us and we never let anyone in.” She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, eyes staying glued to the floor.
“After they took us, we were separated,” Sonya continued. “I was put with the other Sticks from our Maze plus you. Never saw him but I kept hearing things that he was okay, just somewhere else in the facility.”
“I think I remember Rachel and Aris being separated from us,” Harriet added as she pulled her knee up. She rested her chin on top and sighed. “They were special – sometimes they’d have different lessons and tasks. I guess that’s when those WICKED Sticks started making them work for them.”
“They probably didn’t know any better,” Sonya reasoned. “We were all so young and we were doing what they told us to do. I remembered seeing some of those horrible Cranks – one of the techs showed us when were caught wandering the halls one day, do you remember?”
Harriet nodded, “You, me, Maria...maybe Beth too? I know Maria was disgusted but not completely scared of them. Beth nearly wet her pants and was telling the techs that she’d never sneak out again.”
“It worked for a while,” Sonya replied. “The rest was pretty straightforward – lots of tests, memorizing things...Newt snuck out after hours one night and said goodbye before we went up in our Mazes.”
Harriet snapped her head in Sonya’s direction and the latter nodded, explaining that Newt snuck out a lot and managed to figure out where the girls were being held. “Miyoko almost jumped him when he found the secret entrance but she didn’t when he said he was my brother,” she said.
“At least you got to say goodbye,” Harriet said.
Sonya nodded as she stretched her legs out in front of her. “He was crying – I was trying to be strong,” she recalled. “He was angry they were doing this to us – making me change my name, forcing us apart...” She stopped and frowned as she thought of something. “He wasn’t limping when we were brought in. I don’t think he was injured either when he said goodbye to me.”
“Maybe the Maze or the Scorch?” Harriet offered. “Face it Stick, we all came out a little worse for wear after both of those trials – physical and mental. I mean, look at Helen – she’s only got one good eye thanks to that Scorch incident in the tunnels.”
“Do you even know where we’re going?” Sonya asked as she craned her neck, trying to see the pilot.
Harriet shrugged as she searched for Teresa, giving up when she couldn’t spot the dark-haired, blue-eyed trigger from Group A. “She said somewhere safe but who knows if that’s true or she’s just leading us into another trap. I still don’t fully trust her after that mess in the Scorch.”
“For now, let’s just hope we’re gonna be safe,” Sonya sighed.
Harriet nodded before pushing herself to a standing position, excusing herself to go grab something to drink. Sonya watched as the co-leader disappeared to the kitchen area of the Berg and let her head rest against the wall.
Newt was never Immune – it must have come as a terrible shock to him, especially since he didn’t undergo The Swipe. At the time of the announcement, she felt bad for Thomas and Minho who were horrified at the news, while Newt attempted to downplay the revelation. Now that she had her memories back, it was hard to forget that look in his eyes when he heard the news from Rat Man about his Immune status.
Teresa had led the group on an escape mission from WICKED shortly after their procedures. She had insisted on trying to find Thomas and the other two but apparently they had left already with that Brenda Stick and the older male who accompanied her. Teresa had tried to figure out Thomas’s location but gave up.
Sonya sighed as she tried to make herself comfortable, crossing her arms over her chest as she closed her eyes.
She wished Newt could have been Immune. She desperately wanted Rat Man to be wrong about his status. But images of the Cranks she encountered during the journey across the Scorch flashed across her mind.
He’s going to end up like them too, she thought, a tear rolling down her cheek. But the worst part is, he’s never going to remember his sister.
Ok so I was just reading the fever code and I realized that Newt died in the death cure without ever remembering his sister. He didn't even know he had a sister. I'm not at all ok now.
you do know that sonya and newt are siblings right ,,, it was stated in the fever code,
Hi anon,
Yes I have read The Fever Code and I’m aware of Sonya’s true identity pre-Maze. Any headcanons written that hint toward a romantic relationship were written prior to the release of The Fever Code.
I’ll admit that I had a gut feeling that at least one set of the Group A and B members were siblings or related in some way before the prequel was announced.
I would be happy to write more Sonewt sibling content, but were you asking for another one shot or headcanons? If it’s the latter, I’ve written a handful.

As for one shots, I do have an idea for a Death Cure related one. Keep an eye out for that.
Since I can no longer ship Sonewt romantically, how about a movie verse oneshot where Newt remembers and calls Sonya Lizzy?
Plot: Group A settles into their surroundings at The RightArm’s camp. As he grabs more food for Minho and Frypan, Newt strikes up aconversation with Sonya. During their conversation, he recalls a familiar namefrom a distant memory.

“Harriet, can you get the others acquainted?” Mary askedbefore leading Thomas and Brenda away.
Vince scanned each of the survivors from Group A with acritical eye, checking for visible signs that anyone else was turning into aCrank. Minho bit his lip as the leader of The Right Arm got up in his space, holding in a rude comment about the proximity of the other man’s face to his.Once Vince deemed that everyone else seemed to be in the clear, he left Harrietand Sonya in charge of showing the group around the camp.
The volunteers who had been holding Jorge back releasedtheir grip on him and he adjusted his jacket.
“Where did they take Brenda?” Jorge spoke up.
Harriet pointed to a tent further in the back and Jorgestrode toward it, lingering a few feet outside the door. She turned herattention back to the rest of the group and surveyed their appearance. “Youguys are gonna need more gear – gets cold up here in the mountains,” she said. She motioned to Sonya, who excused herself to go grab extra scarves and glovesfor the guys.
“Hmm…” Frypan mused as he studied the contents of his plate. He picked up a forkful of the food, staring intently at it.
Minho wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and groaned.“Fry, just shuck it and eat it! It’s fine – if it was poisoned, I wouldacollapsed.”
Frypan muttered something under his breath before trying abite of the food. He looked thoughtful for a few moments before he gave a nodof approval and continued to dig in.
“Told ya it was good,” Minho said. He scraped his fork alongthe plate to gather up the remainder of the food and put it in his mouth. Afterhe swallowed, he jerked his head in Newt’s direction. The blonde was standingup with his plate in one hand and was using his other to dust crumbs off hispants.
“Get me seconds, okay?” Minho said as he thrust his platetoward Newt.
Newt scowled as he took the other boy’s plate. “Right, doesanyone else need me to grab them seconds too?”
Fry shot him an apologetic look before passing over hisplate to Newt. Newt rolled his eyes as he balanced Frypan’s plate on top ofMinho’s.
“There anymore requests?” Newt asked. He shot Minho anirritated look and received a shrug of the shoulders in return.
“You’re getting up – why have all of us go up?” Minhoreplied, crossing his arms over his chest.
“Thank you Newt,” Frypan called after him.
“Yeah, you’re all bloody welcome!” Newt grumbled as he slunkover to the food tent. With three plates in hand, he balanced Minho’s and Fry’sin one hand before passing over his to the volunteer doing dishes. He made abeeline for the food line and passed the plates over to the volunteer spooningeven-sized portions onto the plates.
“Someone’s hungry,” Sonya mused as she joined him. Shepassed over a plate to another volunteer, who began putting food on it.
Newt shook his head and murmured that it wasn’t for him. Hethanked the volunteer as the plates came back, piled high with hot food and heaccepted them, holding one in each hand.
Sonya’s eyes widened as she stared and she murmured a thankyou as her plate came back. “Was gonna say…” she trailed off. She shook herhead and pushed the tent door flap open, stepping to the side so Newt couldpass.
“Thanks,” Newt said as he slipped through.
“Don’t mention it,” Sonya replied. “I’m gonna guess thatyour chef guy and the annoying loudmouth are the ones who wanted seconds, yeah?”
“You were right,” Newt said. He stole a glance over at hisfriends and rolled his eyes when he saw Minho motioning him over for his food.He looked over at Sonya and excused himself, walking quickly so he could passoff the seconds to his friends.
“Thanks shuckface,” Minho said as he dug in.
Frypan echoed his thanks and Newt nodded as he retrieved hiswater bottle and mumbled something about refilling it. The other two had puttheir heads down as they scarfed their food and Newt walked past Sonya.
“Do they always boss you around like that?” she asked, tilting her head.
Newt shook his head and headed to the water station, unscrewing the lid from his bottle. “Nah, Min’s just lazy. Sometimes I was likethe bloody mother in that Maze, always looking out for them,” he said.
“Funny, that’s kind of what I was like,” Sonya recalled.“Lots of crying girls that were scared and I was the one who comforted them. Imust have given out hundreds of hugs and had gallons of tears shed on myshoulder all those years.” She stared thoughtfully at Newt as he filled hisbottle.
“How did you find these Right Arm shanks?” Newt asked as hewatched the water trickle into his bottle.
“Shanks? Is that some kind of weird word you guys use alot?” Sonya asked, raising a brow.
Newt shook his head and muttered that he and the others hadbeen saying it for a while. “When all of us woke up and came outta that Box, weonly knew some basic things and usually we’d figure out our names a day or twolater,” he replied. “I’ve…I’ve been saying it for so long, I forgot who said itfirst.”
A faint smile crossed her lips and she shifted her weight toher other foot as she leaned against the support pole of a nearby tent. Shecrossed her arms over her chest and watched as Thomas emerged from the medicaltent.
“I don’t know about you guys,” she began, “but we wererescued from our Maze after we solved it. Actually, it was Rachel – she was inour Maze but didn’t make it – that solved it. Aris helped her too. We got takento some shelter facility in the middle of nowhere and got food and clothes. Ithink we were there about…maybe a day or two before all of us heard alarmsgoing off and our rooms were locked. We heard shots fired and lots of screamingin the building. About an hour or so passes and these guys break down our door, yelling that we need to get out of there fast. They loaded us into trucks andwe drove around until we reached camp. It turns out the facility we were at wasWCKD owned and The Right Arm was evacuating it to save Immunes. Right Arm toldus that WCKD had been taking Immunes and using them to create a cure for TheFlare.” She paused, eyes moving back toward Newt.
Newt had finished filling his water bottle and looked up atSonya. Same experiment, same discovery – save Thomas found out what washappening and had them break out on their own, all without a plan.
“Sounds like us, except Thomas was the one who figured outwhat these shanks were really up to,” Newt said. “They’d call a bunch of namesevery day during meals, saying those people were going to some safe haven. We’dnever see them again. Aris showed Thomas a room in the facility where they werekeeping the bodies of the people. …They said those people weren’t…dead, butthey weren’t alive really. Just suspended from the ceiling with tubes and masks– I didn’t see the room, but it sounded bad.”
“Excuse me, I need to get to the water,” a volunteer saidfrom behind Newt.
Newt shot him an apologetic look and stepped away from thewater, moving towards the path between the tents. Sonya gestured to an openarea behind the food and water tents and they walked over.
“Probably better to get out of the way while everyone’sworking,” Sonya explained as she glanced around. “Like I said earlier, our goalis to roll out at first light through the Trans Flat to the Safe Haven. But goon – continue. I know Aris said you guys crawled out of the air ducts andescaped but that’s all he told me.”
Newt nodded before slipping his water bottle into his coatpocket and pulling his gloves on. “Thomas pulled some kind of launcher gun onthem and threatened to shoot if we couldn’t get through. He barely made it tothe other side of the door before it closed on him and we ended up in some kindof warehouse. We took a couple of supplies and came across some Cranks, whichwe had to run from. One of our guys, Winston, got attacked by the Cranks andstarted to get sick. We dragged him through this wasteland before he begged usto leave him to die.”
“Was the Crank girl and older guy with you in WCKD’sfacility?” Sonya interrupted.
“No, we found their hideout during a storm and they actuallytied us up until Thomas said we were looking for The Right Arm,” Newt replied.“Turns out they were looking for them too but weren’t able to leave theirgroup. WCKD found us and Jorge blew the place up to stop them. We got separatedfrom Thomas and Brenda, but she wasn’t a Crank when we first met her. Itprobably happened before we found them in a rundown part of town knocked out.Jorge beat some shank bloody until he got the whereabouts of The Right Armoutta him.”
Sonya blinked before she looked over at the older man whowas emerging from the medical tent looking worn but relieved. “We could usesomeone like him, if we get into any trouble,” she said. “I think I know who you’re talking about – theguy who told you where we were. Mary’s mentioned his name but she saidsomething about him changing sides or something?”
“Well, Jorge punched him until he started talking – eyes gotreally swollen and his nose was a bloody mess,” Newt recalled. “We also stolehis car – think he called it Bertha, or something?”
Sonya snickered at the name and shook her head. “Guess it’sbetter he isn’t coming with us then.” She fiddled with her braid and slid thehair tie off the end, fingers working her hair free. It hung in tight waves, cascading past her shoulders. As she combed her fingers through her strands,Newt frowned as he thought of something.
He’s 9 years old and he’s getting ready for school – whatwould be one of the last days he attended school. He’s brushing his teeth, toothpaste foaming at the corners of his mouth, when the door swings open and ablonde girl dashes over to the mirror. She pushes the stool in place so she cansee the mirror better before she steps onto it and begins to comb her hair.
He continues to brushin silence, lowering his head to spit into the sink until he hears a small “Ow”coming from the mirror. He drops the toothbrush into his holder and looks tosee that the younger girl has snagged the comb on a tangle at the back of herhead.
“I’m stuck,” the girlsaid, pursing her lips into a frown.
He shakes his headbefore walking behind her and trying to work the comb out of the tangle. Hereyes watch him in the mirror as he passes the comb gently over the area andremoves the tangle. Once it’s out, he puts the comb down on the counter andsteps back.
“Thanks,” she repliesbefore gathering all of her hair and pulling it to one side.
“Right then,” Newtsays. “You need help with braiding it?”
The girl shakes herhead as she separates the bundle of hair into three sections. “I got this.”
“Hey, you haven’t seen that Teresa stick, have you?” Sonyainterrupted his thought. “I just realized that I didn’t give her gloves.Actually, come to think of it, did she even eat yet?”
Newt looked around the camp and shrugged his shoulders.Teresa wasn’t his priority – the girl could bloody take care of herself withouttrouble. But now that Sonya had mentioned it, the trigger of their Maze hadmade herself scarce once Group A was deemed safe.
“Is she and that Thomas guy related or something?” Sonyaasked.
His answer was on the tip of his tongue but he found himselfsaying something completely different.
“Lizzy.”
Sonya scrunched her brows up and stared back at Newt. “Who’sLizzy?”
Newt shook his head, brushing some of his hair out of hiseyes. “Sorry, not sure why I said that. …Ya know? Maybe it was you doing yourhair that made me think of that.” He turned away, eyes staring at a mountain inthe distance. “I think I just remembered something about my life. My real life – not the one I made in theMaze. I think I had a sister before the Maze – she had long hair like yours andwould braid it in the same way. Name was Lizzy.” A quiet smile tugged at hislips and he sighed.
“Sorry, not sure where that buggin’ memory came from,” hesaid.
Sonya crossed her arms over her chest, a wistful look in hereyes. “At least you can remember something,” she replied, “Rachel told me theywiped everyone’s mind blank before we were sent up. She purposely got attackedby one of the creatures in our Maze and got some of her memories back. Sheclaims they were all dark ones she wanted to forget – I’ll admit I’m kindascared to know what kind of person I was like back then.”
She took a step towards Newt and placed a hand on hisshoulder. “We had a Beth in our Maze, but I never heard anyone call her ‘Lizzy’.Who knows? Maybe she survived this awful world and didn’t end up in a WCKDfacility.”
Newt nodded as he picked up one end of his scarf, winding itaround his neck a few times. He pushed the memory to the back of his mind andglanced over at the fire where his friends sat.
“I should –”
“Yeah I need to go check on the packing for tomorrow,” Sonyainterrupted. She raised a hand before slipping between the tents and hanging aright.
“So what were you and that Sonya shank talking about?” Minhodemanded once he returned.
Newt muttered something about the plan for tomorrow’sdeparture and Minho turned away satisfied. Frypan was busy watching Sonya,Harriet, and Aris talk around another fire, laughing at something Aris said.
He heard someone crouch next to him and he turned to see itwas Thomas.
“Do you think we’re finally gonna be safe?” Thomas asked.
Newt tilted his head, eyes drifting down to Sonya.
“I’d say it’s better than being strung up to a bunchamachines.”
Some headcanons I came up with after reading The Fever Code about Sonya and Newt. If you have NOT read the book yet, please scroll by and ignore this post. Otherwise, spoilers ahead under the cut!
"Why am I getting a new name?”
“A new start,” the man said to her, trying to be friendly. “Your life is going to change for the better and you’re going to be safe from the bad things out there.”
“But what’s wrong with the name Lizzy?” the girl asked.
“We’d like it if you went by your name Sonya,” the man replied. “Now Sonya, are you going to cooperate?”
The girl sat up straight and strained her ears, swearing she heard a faint scream somewhere. It made her nervous but she refused to show fear in front of this stranger.
“My name is Sonya – I don’t know your name Mr. _____?” she replied with a tilt of her head.
“Randall,” the tech replied. “Did you ever go by another name?”
A trick – but he won’t get me that easily! she thought.
“No I just said my name is Sonya,” she replied, folding her hands in her lap. “I never had another name.”
“I’m Beth,” the dark haired girl with green eyes said as she extended a hand.
Just like my old name – except I was called Lizzy, Sonya thought as she shook the other girl’s name.
“Sonya – nice to meet you,” Sonya replied. “Where were you from?”
“Arizona – my sister was taking care of me when those people showed up and took me away,” Beth recalled, trying to hide her tears. “You got a funny accent – you’re not from here, are you?”
Sonya shook her head and mumbled that she was picked up in what used to be the United Kingdom.
“Was it just you?”
“No...me and...me and my brother,” Sonya replied, stabbing something on her plate.
“Have you seen the boys?” Harriet asked her one day.
“What boys? You don’t mean the adults right?” Sonya asked.
Harriet scrunched her face up and scowled. “Yeah course I meant those creeps – no! I meant there’s supposed to be boys our age here too. Except, all I’ve seen is one skinny guy with some girl who might be his twin.”
Newt, Sonya thought as she pictured her older brother.
“No one’s seen him probably,” Sonya muttered under her breath at lunch.
“Seen who? Your secret boyfriend?” Harriet teased as she joined the other girl at the table.
Sonya jumped and tried to cover up her comment. “I’m just...whatever I’m just tired – too many tests and sick of all the needles.”
“Uh huh, really convincing Sony!” Miyoko jokes as she slid in next to her. “Come out with it – who is this mystery guy you’re babbling about?”
Sonya sighed as she ran a hand across her face, groaning as she noticed two pairs of eyes on her. Scratch that – three with Beth joining them.
“It’s just my brother,” she huffed with a shrug of her shoulders. “The people grabbed him too but I don’t think he was supposed to come with me.”
Both girls nodded to show they understood and Sonya sighed as she looked around the sea of girls seated in the cafeteria. Not a single boy was there. She had heard that the facility they were in was pretty big and guessed that there had to be boys around here somewhere.
“Sony! Hey wake up!” Miyoko hissed as she shook Sonya’s shoulder. “Guess who’s here to see you?”
Sonya sprung out of bed and tiptoed around the other beds to the fake closet that led to the girls’ sleeping quarters. The moment she saw her brother, she couldn’t help but feel relieved seeing him still sane and healthy, albeit upset about what was going to transpire within the next few hours. Like Newt, she was sad but she told herself to be strong for him.
He needs me more than I thought I needed him, she thought.
Thanks to being surrounded by American teachers and children combined with the Swipe process, Sonya lost her lingering British accent she had before being taken in by WICKED. Until she had her memories restored, she was under the impression that she had come from some US state before being placed in the Maze, having forgotten what her home looked like.
“You see those Sticks from Group A? I swear some of them looked kinda like us!” Harriet remarked after they put down Thomas and tied him to the tree by their campsite.
Sonya nodded as she stole another glance over at Thomas, taking a swig from her water bottle. “Yeah I saw some of them. The really mouthy guy kinda reminded me of Miyoko.”
“There was a blonde guy who kinda reminded me of you,” Harriet added. “Maybe similar face shape and eyes?”
Sonya snapped her head up at that comment and frowned. She bit her lip trying to picture the boy in her mind, but gave up after a few minutes. “I’ll probably see him again...or not...”
Something tells me this might be bad, Sonya thought as she was admitted to a room to under go the Swipe removal procedure. She lay down as instructed and took a deep breath before everything went dark.
The memories came flooding back like rapidfire – the last day she saw snow outside her house, her mom falling to ground as a man in a suit shot her parents before grabbing her and...Newt. Newt crying as he held her one last time, sobbing, “I love you Lizzy.”
Elizabeth – Lizzy...that was her real name – not Sonya!
“You okay Stick?” Harriet asked her as they gathered edible plants and fruit for lunch in Paradise. “You’ve been awfully quiet since we got here.”
Sonya swallowed hard as she stared past Harriet, looking at a flower that reminded her of one her neighbors once had in their garden.
“I was immune but...he wasn’t,” Sonya said. “They shot our parents and took both of us – said he was going to be used as a control factor.”
“Newt?”
“He called me Lizzy,” Sonya continued, tears starting to pool at her eyes. “Before we were sent up into our Mazes he snuck out and said goodbye. He was crying and I had to comfort him, even though he was older! How could I have forgotten about my brother?!”
She sank to her knees and let out a broken sob, shoulders shaking and tears flowing freely. She hated them for making her forget her brother. She hated them for taking her name. She hated forgetting that they shot and killed her parents without remorse.
