The morning sunlight is like youIt might be a little childish, but I like itIf I’m by your side when you wake me upI have nothing more to wish for
She seemed hesitant when he first asked her but he smiled, took her hand in his, and pressed a gentle kiss to the back of her hand to say “it’ll be okay” without having to speak a single word. It wouldn’t be Jihyun if she didn’t have her reservations about certain things, a hesitation he wouldn’t see from others, one he didn’t with his ex-girlfriends, but he said it back then and he’ll still say it now.
I don’t need you to be perfect but for so long, I’ve wanted you to be mine.
He brings them back to the night where the path they’re on began. For him, it started long before that summer night but he knows when they left, everything was about to change. The sand is warm beneath his feet and he fibs that he sees glass in the sand the way she was going for the excuse to lift her up into his arms, carrying her closer to the shore and stealing a kiss. There it is, one of his smug grins when she accuses him of lying.
“There’s no glass, is there?”
“There could’ve been.”
He drops the picnic basket down first, more hesitant to let her go and she smacks his arm for taking so long. When it comes to his cheesy antics, Jihyun tends to catch on quickly. His proudest moment is how long it took her to realize he was bringing more and more of his clothes over. It’s the source of jokes now but he’s proud of it anyway. His sister told him he was too young to know what love is. At sixteen, he was too young. In his twenties, for the type of guy he used to be, maybe he’s still too young but when she looks at him, even while devouring a sandwich and complaining that he didn’t have to take the time to cook himself, that’d she would be just as happy with McDonald’s, he knows he’s not too young anymore.
He finally understands what his brother saw in Theresa: a future. She falls asleep first and it’s his chance to say what he’s been wanting to say, what he’ll have the courage to tell her when she’s awake one day.
I love you.
The sun is close to rising and he knows he can’t let her sleep much longer. With a smile, he kisses her cheek, a light shake of her shoulder, the day’s starting without them. When her eyes flutter open, he knows something more is starting too. Them. This. Us.
Let’s all together one, two, three, let’s begin
