Important entomology etymology news: the word "gal" meaning girl/young woman, is much older than I thought! Noted in 1795 in the Columbian Grammar of Benjamin Dearborn, an American. (Google Books link)
"Gal" is on Dearborn's "Liſt of Improprieties" or Vulgarisms, which is fascinating because many of them resemble modern American pronunciations, some I recognise as dialect, and others, like "hizzen" for "his", are obscure and obsolete.
I don't know if gal is an Americanism, or a regional British pronunciation that Americans adopted (Northern English accents do some weird things with vowels).
By the 1840s there were a number of popular songs referencing "gals", the US Library of Congress has a very good blog post about "Buffalo Gals" (not to be confused with the 1980s breakdance hit by that name), and related songs, also looking into their minstrel show roots.

I guess Barry Manilow is def one? #wod #wordswordswords #wordaddict #etymology #songsters Origin: Tunesmith was originally an Americanism, datingfrom the Jazz Age (roughly from the 1918Armistice to the stock-market crash of 1929). Fittingly enough, an early citation for tunesmith(1923) is attributed to the American bandleaderPaul Whiteman (1890–1967), who debuted GeorgeGershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue (1924 (at Rosarito, Mexico) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bny30ysDRFr/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=rbjtz761p31
