"this is why we can't have nice things." I'm sorry that you feel this way. My point was not that violence against males is a result of systematic discrimination. I was just pointing out the shocking statistic. I will try to present my information in a clearer way next time. Also, misandry, like misogyny, does not mean institutionalized oppression. Rather, it means simply the dislike or hatred of men/boys, which I'm sure is practiced.
Thanks for responding!
The thing about hatred/distrust of men is that it's very often a reaction to misogyny, and a pretty understandable one at that. In an ideal world, nobody would hate anybody that way, but we don't live in an ideal world, and women (and nonbinary folks) disliking the whole male gender because of abuses received at their hands is not at all the same as institutionalized misogyny, same as PoC disliking/distrusting white people on principle. Quite honestly, if we had no misogyny, we probably wouldn't have people hating men on principle.
Mind you, I do think that telling any group, privileged or not, that they'd be better off dead is an oppressive act, because privilege is not a monolith and even a white cis straight male from an upper-class background might be struggling severely with a mental illness that encourages suicidal ideation, and nothing gives anyone the right to (especially intentionally) say something that could trigger that.
Anyway, regarding that murder statistic: the reason I reacted as I did is because you presented that as though it were a case of gender-based violence, and it's not. 80% of murder victims being men doesn't mean there's an institutionalized societal desire to see men dead for being men. Mind you, a significant number of those men were likely murdered because of other oppressions- being part of the LGBTQ spectrum (being mistaken for such), being PoC, being disabled, or even being privileged themselves but allying themselves with oppressed groups (George Tiller, the abortion provider, comes to mind). If no person of any gender was killed for these reasons, ever, well, our murder rates would go way down in general. But that doesn't mean men are being killed for being men*._____*Not that this never happens. But still.
