Castiel never stopped looking for his cherished one. But he also never stopped the rebellion. after a while he felt bad for focusing on the revolution more. but the truth was: he didn't know if his beloved Cupid was even alive.
he wanted to believe she was strong enough to survive the fall. they had been through so much together he knew she could handle touch situations, but after months and months of searching he started to loose hope. he forced himself to come to terms with the fact he'll never see her again. although the whole situation kept him up with a constant hole in his chest, he tried his best in turning his grief into strength.
she became a ghost to him. he'd see her sipping coffee at diners. he’d hear her laugh when he zoned out in the tv screen. he'd smell her sweet scent every time he lit a candle. he’d pet his own wings, wishing he were touching her feathers instead. but his weren’t nearly as soft as his adored Cupid.
“Cas? hey buddy, have you been listening?”
once he became closer to the Winchester brothers, he started to see her walking on the side of the road through the backseat windows of the Impala...
"Cas!" Deans loud bark snapping Castiel out of his daydream of Sonnet. his hands halting on the feathers in his lap. his ears perking up as he looked forward, making eye contact with Dean's bright emerald green eyes in the rear view mirror. an almost sheepish look was in the Seraphim's eyes. as if he was just caught looking at the magazines that lay at the bottom of Dean's duffle bag.
"youll get dizzy lookin out the window for hours like that. give it a rest." he starts to chuckle "look at the Game Boy I found back in Trinidad!" Castiel looked at the space next to him, there lay the gadget Dean had picked up on the side of the road. Sam interjects with a scoff.
"give nature a rest? you're so out of touch, Dean". The younger Winchester shook his head. usually Sam would start to smile, but ever since he got back from Hell, he’s been different...
“m just sayin... Cas' been on Earth for a while now and he hardly knows any human culture. this is a perfect opportunity for him to learn somethin' interesting about us humans other than eating forbidden apples." Dean shrugs with that shit eating grin on his face.
"i'll think about it" Castiel stated in his monotone voice as he resumed his gaze out the window. leading Dean to scoff and focus back on the road.
the brothers were on a case. and Castiel didn't necessarily want to be there, but he didn't have much else to do. so might as well join his favorite humans.
it was after he had gotten in the 40 something year old car that he found out where they were headed.
Sam was the only one who gave Castiel an actual answer. “Colorado. more specifically around the Telluride area.” Dean started to laugh and make jokes to himself. saying something about how the Seraphim should’ve packed a scarf or a sweater. it didn’t matter. Castiel wasn’t paying attention. his eyes slightly widened as he made the dawning realization.
the Angel couldn't believe it. Colorado? out of all places this is the hunt he decided to join? he can't go back there.. it's been too soon since Sonnet… well it has been almost a year. but if he thought he saw his Cupid everywhere now, then he'll surly see her in everything there.
“pretty sure it's a Wendigo. maybe a Rugaru" Dean mumbles as he thinks out loud. Sam provides a rebuttal. “Dean.. it could be a couple Ghouls..”
the snow. the smell of pine. the gentle breezes from the mountains. the smell of hot coco.
“yeah but Rugarus love the cold”
“how do you know that? just because they hate fire?”
oh and how Sonny loved all the animals of Colorado. the Elk. the squirrels. the wild birds. the rabbits. the-
"well anyway- why’d you ask? just curious, Cass?" Dean raises an eyebrow through the rear view mirror. Sam easily picked up on Castiel's absent stare.
Dean notices too and reluctantly asks… “hey..uh, somethin’ bothering you Cas?". His voice immediately calming in Castiel's muffled ears.
Castiel snaps out of his thoughts once more. “yeah.. i’m just curious where this car is headed.” Castiel tries to flash a smile. something he often saw humans do to try and reassure one another.
“okay..” Dean furrows his brows as he nods and decides not to poke any further.
the Impala starts hitting more snowy weather. flurries smash against the windshield and are quickly discarded with the wipers.
the trio reached their destination. a small town just outside Telluride, Colorado. they booked themselves a motel room and got to digging into local news articles. Castiel doesn’t know much about laptops and cellphones, so he always felt sort of useless when technology was being used.
instead of reading a book or watching the television like he usually does, he decided to look out the window. like a guard dog he stood there for hours, just watching.
after almost 2 hours, and many looks between the winchesters, Dean cleared his throat. “so uh. Cas? you know you can sit down right..?” Castiel turned around and nodded, not moving from his station at the window.
after another 2 hours the sun began to set. the wind howling as the snow picked up. the sunset reflecting onto the snow, creating a glowing, orange, sheet outside.
“so, tomorrow we can check up on that bar you said the vics were regulars at…” Sam said shutting his laptop. “why not now?” the elder brother furrows his eyebrows confused.
Sam scoffs a laugh. “Dean, you’re joking right? it’s gettin pretty wild out there. you wanna go out now?” snow fell and packed onto the ground more and more by the second.
Dean leans back in his chair to look out the window. “‘s not that bad…”
“Dean. Seriously? no. we’re not going out-“
“i am.” Castiel announces. the brothers face him for the first time in 4 hours as he walks a little closer.
The brothers look at Castiel with their eyebrows pinched together, creasing their foreheads. “you’re going out now?” Sam asks with sass in his tone. “what? you felt left out looking at the rest of the kids making snowmen?” Sam teases further. his palm resting on his thigh as he sits and looks up at the Angel.
“i have an errand”
“now??” Sam tilts his head.
“yes.” and with that, Castiel was gone. leaving his black, iridescent feathers scattered on the floor of the dingy room. “god i hate when he does that.” Dean sighs and wipes his face.
Sonnet always said she loved how the log cabin looked like a house straight out of a children’s book. that’s how she wanted it, so that’s how Castiel built it.
the celestial creature stood outside, just admiring the home. the snow melting on impact as it hit his trench coat. after close inspection and attention to detail, he noticed something in the window…
through the drawn curtains he saw that a light was on. why are the lights on? is there a squatter? an intruder?
Castiel let the blade tucked in his sleeve fall to his palm as he entered his house.
the fireplace was lit and crackling. as he passed the couch, he saw a figure huddled up in a ball next to it.
his footsteps remained soft, trying not to alert the intruder… until he hit the creak the floor. his eyelids raise as he realized his stupidity. he knows this cabin - his cabin - like the back of his hand. yet fate had him step on the creaky floorboard.
the girl quickly awoke and sat up. holding a butcher knife in front of her for protection. “get back! this isn’t your home it’s mine!!” her voice strained and tried to be loud. she was weak. bruised and covered in cuts, some healed, some new. her hair was matted and tangled.
Castiel stood wide eyed as he finally saw the full figure in his living room. her wings’ usual shine almost gone completely. they didn’t have many feathers and they hung low.
“..Sonny…?” he whispers and drops his blade. it hits the floor with a loud thud and “clank”, the only sound in the room.
Sonnet sat with her mouth agape as she looked up at him. no way. this has to be a dream- this isn’t real.
“Sonnet!” Castiel almost yells, he sounds so loud in the quiet room. Sonnet throws the butcher knife aside as he kneels down and swiftly closes the gap between them. he wraps his arms and wings around her frame. burying his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling her candied scent mixed with blood and sweat.
She melts in his arms and returns the embrace. “I missed you so so much.” her voice and body trembling from the emotion as the fireplace warms the both of them. her hands gripping at the back of his coat. scared he’d disappear if she let go.
“I missed you so much my dearest”. Castiel has never been like this before. his voice is so broken and quiet. he’d be surprised if Sonnet even understood what he said. after a few seconds of the embrace, Sonnet had to ask the question that had been nagging at her for months.
“..Cassie… baby, what took you so long…?”
her broken voice rang in the air as Castiel registered what she had asked him. Her tone was slightly joking as she punctuated her question with a small chuckle. but Castiel knew deep down that she was upset.
He pulls away, still holding her. his eyes slightly widened. “..Sonnet I did look for you.. please don’t think i didn’t try…” his voice quiet and his chest tight. “but.. I started to think you were gone.. forever.. and I…” he doesn’t want to admit his foolish decision, but he can’t lie to Sonnet. “.. I gave up.. I stopped looking.” his voice broke as his eyes plead for forgiveness. he firmly holds her sides. “darling i’m so sorry.. i shouldn’t have stopped.”
oh my god? his eyes. Sonnet had never seen him like this. was he going to cry? seeing his broken expression changed Sonnet completely. she couldn’t be mad at him anymore.
as he anticipates the mouthful he’ll get from her, instead he receives an adoring and soft gaze. the Cupid gently held his face and started to shake her head. “It’s fine.. it’s okay… we’re together now” she gently coos and shushes him. he shakes his head as his eyes water more. “i should’ve never stopped looking. they took away Angel Radio- but i looked all over the news and on all the police radars for any Jane Does’ found. i tried so hard but i gave up- my sweetheart im so sorry”.
“shhh i know, i know. darling it’s okay…” Sonnet softly murmurs and leans into him. she’s hurt that it’s taken them so long to reunite, but she could never stay too angry at Castiel. especially when he tried so hard to make this day come.
His brows furrow with disbelief. “why aren’t you mad Sonnet? why don’t you despise me? why aren’t you fuming? or cussing me out like how you normally would?” Castiel quietly snaps. his voice is lowered but that doesn’t erase how full of frustration and confusion he is.
Sonnet pulls him in for another embrace and gently rocks him. “i love you my Seraphim. i just missed you so much.” her voice breaks a little… she was never a big fan of showing vulnerable emotions.
“i love you too” Castiel sniffles and he clutches onto her for dear life.
the two were finally back together again. the unbreakable, celestial duo they were sat infront of the fire for what felt like eternity. but even eternity wasn’t enough for them. soon Castiel’s phone began to buzz…
A/N: sorry this took so long :(
This takes place around early season 6. i say that just because Castiel is relatively new to team free will AND Sam is Soulless :P but i dunno how many of the canon events/storylines from the show i’ll add. so this might all end up being fanfic universe BS! :3
Heaven was fed up with Sonnet. She was "more trouble than she was worth" as Naomi put it.
Recently Castiel had gained a following on the topic of a possible Rebellion in the clouds.
The Angels against this revolution blamed Sonnet. albeit, It was a realistic theory that Sonnet planted the idea of Free Will in Castiel’s head. but that wasn't entirely the case.
Yes, Sonnet and Castiel had spoken of Free Will before. but Sonnet never thought the Angel would do anything about it. let alone start an insurrection of this scale.
in hopes of terminating the rebellion before it truly began: Naomi sent out a bounty for Sonnet. naturally, the Cupid hid for a while. unknowing of what she should do. she definitely couldn’t flee to Earth like she always did. she couldn’t risk destruction of her Sanctuary in Colorado.
"There's no way we can prove i didn't help you start the rebellion Cassie-“
"exactly! there's no proof you helped me either-"
"Castiel." her voice soft and smooth "my record. i'm a perfect reason for the uprising..." Sonnet had began to accept her unknown fate.
Castiel was in shambles. he didn't know what the possible consequences of her "crime" would be. he also felt responsible for her accusations.
after hours of debate with Castiel, Sonnet convinced him to let her turn herself in.
As she stood up, heading to Naomi’s building, Castiel stopped her. his touch gentle and warm on her bare arm. “wait… Sonny…please.”
Castiel bent down and picked a Lily flower. he held it out to her and placed a hand on her shoulder. “i’m so sorry Sonnet… this is all my fault- I shouldn’t have started this. and i know a flower doesn’t do justice on what you deserve from me. Sonnet this is so unfair and-” Castiel continues rambling as Sonnet gazes at him with the most adoring and loving eyes.
“Cassie.. darling stop..” She interrupts his digression with the gentlest voice. She takes the Lily from him and smiles up at him. “this isn’t your fault. everything’ll be okay if i own up to Naomi-“
“but dear, you didn’t do anything. you shouldn’t have to own up to anything.” Castiel pleads.
“I know, i know” Sonnet nods and agrees. “but i’ll have to take what i’m given”
The Seraphim looked down upon her with such sorrowful and regretful eyes. the Cupid leans up and hugs him tight. she pulled away a little to gracefully kiss his cheek.
this is goodbye.
~~~~~
Sonnet marched into Naomi's office. Castiel stood outside the building, watching the windows of the workplace like a hawk.
At first it was just muffled talking. then groans and shuffling. then it escalated so much so that Sonnet screamed loud. loud enough for Castiel to hear way down below. there continued to be a lot of commotion, finally, a loud ring and flash of light. accompanied by more of Sonnet’s cries.
Castiel covered his ears and squeezed his eyes shut. it was so blaring and so bright. nothing like he’d ever experienced in his long life.
as the light ceased, so did Sonnet’s screaming.
The Cupid had been exiled from Heaven.
