[SonTikal] Grow Up.

To say Sonic the Hedgehog didn't have a lot on his mind right now would be a lie. 

As of this moment, the hero who could never retire and give up what he loves was stuck at war with his inner child. He was a reflective type by nature -- and he was musing over... how much had changed this past year. As he ran through familiar places, not stopping to see familiar faces. He looked just as stressed as he actually was; so maybe it was for the best that he was a blur. 

His younger self was shouting at him for his decisions. 

"T-Tikal, I--..."

"What is it, love...?" 

".. I know. You've--... been wondering when I'd propose, a-and... hate to break it to ya, but... I can't.

"I'm a free spirit. Doing something like that, it--... I can't..."

"... S-so you--..."

Luckily, he had an epiphany. 

"... But I do want to be with you."

You idiot, his inner child screamed. This wasn't freedom. He was tied down. He couldn't go wherever he wanted. But he lashed back; rushing faster and faster as he passed a familiar minecart to a jungle, and soon... the rebuilt workshop.

".... So. Tikal."

"Y-Yes...?"

"Will you. Will you be with me until I die; squashed like a bug by one of Eggman's toys?" 

"Y-yes...! And... will you--?"

"Of course! I just... want you to know that."

She won't let you run. What am I doing now?! He thought back. 

"Because I need my freedom. I'll run a lot; I'll go all kinds of places without you, AND with you. Best vacations you'll ever have. But I promise. I'll tell you before I leave -- somehow. And ask you when you want me to be back by.

"And no matter where I go....

I'll always love and be with you. Alright, honeybunny?" 

He smiled at her giggle as it replayed in his head. The inner child was rolling his eyes. 

"Of course, Sonic... it'll make you happy, right?"

"Oh, I'll be the happiest man in the world if you're fine with just... knowing that. And not needing legal rights." 

"Well. I already do!"

"So then you're mine... 

"And I'm yours."

The kiss they shared after that hit his lips again as he opened the door to one of the newer rooms of the workshop. The sweet sensation that made his feet mentally lift off of the floor for a second.. was destroyed as the inner child finally backed off once he realized what room it was. 

The nursery Tikal wanted build faster than Sonic was ready for. It was ready now... but what bothered him was how rapidly the baby was developing. 

New sets of stress overtook the father-to-be as he rubbed his hand across the top of his head with a long, forced inhale and exhale. 

Why did she want this nursery built so fast? And she LOOKED like she was going to give birth any day now from what he saw...! Did echidnas develop children super fast?! Faster than he knew--?! 

He happened to see something... something in the crib. Something white...

He turned his head; just as his communicator under his glove buzzed at a message from Tikal; which was soon read out to him. "MESSAGE FROM: TIKAL. ON MY WAY HOME."

The second he heard it, he pulled his glove cuff up and began to call her. Within a few seconds he was blessed with her voice. 

"Hello, hon!" 

"Hey, Tikal--..." He stops there, then starts again. 

"... Why is there an egg in the crib? And why are you out? I mean... didn't you say you had to stay insi--?"

He's interrupted by her lighthearted, lifting laughter. 

"Oh, I can't believe I forgot to tell you...!

"... My kind lays eggs, sweetie."

... He blinked a few times; dropping his hands to his sides. 

"So... that egg's... our BABY..?!"

"Yep! Why I wanted the nursery built early and why I had to stay home! Because I couldn't risk being out of the house when I laid it!" 

As she speaks, her lover found himself pacing around the crib before he decided to take the risk and pick the egg up; hold it in his hands. Technically, the baby wasn't here yet-- but... He chuckled with plenty of love as he held it. 

"D-... does it need to be kept warm?" 

"... Well, yeah. Like all eggs! ... Why?"

More laughter left him. 

Inner child? 

"Haha! Well! Guess I'm staying home for the next few months! 

"Because it's like raising Chao! I'm GREAT at this!! Trust me; she'll probably hatch early!"

What inner child? 

Because the three things Sonic the Hedgehog could never do even if he wanted to...

Was stop running, retire...

And grow up.

{SonTikal} Bouncy Castle Fun -- Part 1, TBC

"What in the name of Aurora is that?"

It had been a long, long day for Tikal. The day's activity consisted of going into Station Square to do various errands, the most notable -- and recently finished of which -- being grocery shopping. It was a hot summer day (now evening, of course), and many people on the streets and in the stores had been snappy with her because of it. The foul mood had rubbed off on Tikal, who'd been forward to simply going inside and putting her purchases away then settling with a cup of tea.

She hadn't expected to find a brightly coloured inflatable castle right outside the workshop, though. Two pairs of white and red sneakers could be seen on the side and gales of laughter were coming from within.

She's greeted by Tails, who sticks his head out and waves with a grin. "Hi, Tikal! Sonic rented a bouncy castle for us to play with today and tomorrow! It's a lot of fun, you should come in here and check it out! Even the pets like it!"

"No thank you." Uh oh, that sounded a little more curt than what was necessary. Tikal attempts to soften her tone with her next words. "Er, that is, I need to put all these away before I do anything. So maybe later, okay?"

The kit's ears droop in slight disappointment, but he still gives her a tiny smile. "O-oh... That's fine. Do you want some help with the groceries?"

She shakes her head, shifting a few bags around in an attempt to keep from dropping them. Sonic peeks out now, waving cheerfully. "No, I'm okay. I can do it myse-- Yes, hello Sonic..."

Before either boy can say anything more, Tikal is on her way inside with a sigh. As the workshop door closes, Sonic looks down at Tails questioningly before they go back to bouncing around.

"What's up with her?"

"I don't know," Tails replies, giggling a little at one of the Chao's antics as they played. "I think the heat got to her or something. She sounded pretty tired and stressed."

"Tired and stressed, huh?" Sonic hums in thought, doing a couple of backflips as he ponders this. Those earned a few claps from Tails and Butter. "Well, nothing a good jump wouldn't fix! We should drag Tikal in here, like, now."

"Tell you what," Tails begins, motioning to the Chao. "I'll go in with these guys and take over putting away the groceries, so you two can have some alone time. I've been meaning to upgrade my handheld, anyways, and now's as good a time as any."

Sonic doesn't look convinced. "You sure, little buddy?"

Tails nods, chuckling. "Of course I'm sure! You guys already had to cancel a date night 'cause of me--"

Sonic's quick to interrupt, frowning. "You were sick, though. Neither of us wanted to leave you alone like that!"

"Yeah, well whether you were willing to or not, that's still because of me. And on top of that you've been hanging out with me all day. If you want to spend some time being all mushy and lovey-dovey with Tikal, you totally can! It's no big deal."

"Wha-- Hey!" Sonic huffs, hopping over to his little brother and giving him a bit of a noogie. "We're not like that!"

Tails laughs, squirming out of Sonic's grip and spinning his tails. He rises just out of Sonic's reach. "I was only teasing! Though the way you're blushing, I can tell you two totally are. Well, come on, everyone! Time to go in!"

With that, Tails flies out of the bouncy castle, Chao and Pokémon crowding into the workshop after him. Sonic lets out an embarrassed chuckle before climbing out of the castle himself and pulling his shoes on. He's back less than a minute later, carrying a rather flustered Tikal bridal-style over to the tent.

"Sonic, what're you--"

She's silenced by a grin, Sonic kicking his shoes off again before setting Tikal down and unlacing her sandals for her.

"It's date night!" He announces, "Tails is fine with it, before you say anything, so the castle is ours for tonight. Pretty fitting for a princess, huh?"

Tikal blushes softly, muttering something about not calling her that under her breath. Sonic chuckles, hopping back inside. With a roll of the eyes, Tikal follows.

There's a good moment of silence between them as Sonic hops around and Tikal watches. Realizing this Sonic halts and folds his arms, tapping a socked foot impatiently. "Y'know, the point of this thing is to jump around in it..."

"O-oh, right... Sorry."

"Okay, what's wrong?" Sonic groans, springing to Tikal's side in one giant leap. "You're all mopey."

"I-it's nothing, really. Just that a lot of people were quite rude to me today, and..."

"The heat didn't exactly help?" Sonic finishes, taking Tikal's hand and giving it a squeeze. "That sucks."

{SonTikal} Untitled Drabble #1

The one thing they had absolutely agreed upon was that no matter what, Tails came first. The fact that the other two Mobian residents in the workshop were dating was probably awkward enough for the kit; the absolute last thing he needed was to feel left out in his own house. So Sonic and Tikal spent much of their daylight hours acting as though nothing had ever changed between them, spending as much time as they could with Tails and leaving any sort of more romantic interaction until after he had gone to bed. Not that they minded, it made everything all the more special.

The kit had said his goodnights about an hour or so ago. Now the hedgehog and echidna were curled up in a blanket, watching a movie on the couch. Well... Tikal was watching, anyways. Sonic on the other hand was idly playing with her spines, a habit he'd taken up as soon as he found out the contact soothed her. Gloved fingers ran lightly over the bleached markings, remembering what she'd told him about them: They weren't natural, but the products of a prosperity ceremony her tribe held so long ago. Every child recieved their markings around their fifth or sixth year of life, and wore them proudly.

As his hands travel upwards once again, Sonic notices that they brushed against tiny little... somethings on the side of Tikal's head. The startled echidna lets out a squeak, promptly distangling herself from his arms and scooting to the other end of the couch to stare at him. Her muzzle was a bright red, and her expression is accusing-- as though he'd just been groping her chest or something equally inappropriate.

"What? What'd I do?" Sonic asks, raising an eyeridge.

"M-my ears..." Tikal replies, turning her head and holding up a spine. Sure enough, a pointed little ear that highly resembled one of her spines could be seen. "They're really sensitive..."

Oh, was that all? One of the hedgehog's own ears flick back and forth as he questions why she'd moved like that. Wait, sensitive...

"I didn't hurt you, did I?" He frowns.

Tikal shakes her head, voice growing quieter as she continues speaking. "Um, no... Not at all. Q-quite the opposite, really..."

"Oh, really now?"

A smirk tugs at Sonic's lips as he reaches out for his girlfriend, letting her get settled in his arms again should she wish to. Tikal lets out a tiny huff before giving in, resting comfortably against his chest and rearranging the blanket. Sonic leans down to ghost his lips over her tiara... While his hands find their way under Tikal's spines once again, lightly roaming just close enough to her ears to get a reaction out of her, but not touching the actual things.

Tikal blinks and squirms lightly, blush returning and heating up her face. O-oh, that felt really nice... All the same, the echidna lets out weak protests.

"What?" Sonic chuckles, releasing her head only to pull her up so that they were face to face. A mischievous smirk adorns his features, emerald eyes lit up with playful intent. "It doesn't bother you..."

He leans in, brushing aside a spine to get a clear shot at an ear. His breath is warm, tickling the sensitive thing and reducing Tikal to putty in his hands then and there. "Does it?"

A whispered "N-no..." is the only response Sonic gets, Tikal feeling too embarrassed to say much else. Taking that as permission to keep it up, the hedgehog allows her to slide back down and takes up lightly scratching the area around her ears. He lets out a chuckle at the soft, blissful, rumbling purrs that begin to rise from the echidna.

The purring dies down after a half hour, Tikal going rather quiet, actually. Glancing down to check on her, Sonic finds that she's fallen asleep. Removing his hands from the princess' spines and settling them around her waist, he makes a mental note definitely not to forget about what just happened. With one final chuckle, the hedgehog murmurs a goodnight before turning his attention to the movie once again.
