“I was sacked from school when I was in form 2. I won’t tell you what I did”. I met Gabby in Navrongo whilst doing a story on Inequality in Ghana for UNICEF. Gabby is a very brilliant kid but he’s never going back to school. He’s accepted his fate. His dad is dead and his mom is hustling in Kumasi, which is 100s of miles away from him. He doesn’t have the privilege of a typical Ghanaian parent who’d go beg for him or just find him another school. It is very easy to look at him and say “he’s probably a bad boy that’s why they sacked him” but don’t you know many other teenagers from privilege who committed many sackable offenses but still managed to finish school? It is not a fair system when the poor get fewer chances than the rich.
