A picture of the late Ki Hardjo Soeripto with his wife, Tukiyem. Mbah Soeripto was a Gamelan player and also a Gamelan maker for almost five decades since 1942. Gamelan is the traditional ensemble music of the Javanese, Sundanese, and Balinese peoples of Indonesia, made up predominantly of percussive instruments. In Java, gamelan is played for official occasions or court ceremonies, celebrations such as weddings, for concerts, to accompany dance, dance-drama, and shadow-puppet theatre, It is also played for community events. Chin Tribe Lady The last of the remaining tribeswomen with these magnificent tattoos drawn on their face. The tribes first began to ink their faces as a way of disfiguring their beauty, to make themselves unattractive in hopes that by doing so, they could avoid being kidnapped or chosen as concubines by the Burmese kings. The process of facial tattooing is extremely painful especially on the tender eyelid areas and dangerous as some even died of infection. Pelican With their immense gular (throat) pouches and equally large bills, pelicans are among some of the most easily identifiable birds. The gular pouch works like a fishing net to scoop the pelican’s prey and the upper mandible of the pelican’s beak acts as a cap over the throat pouch to trap the prey within. Black on white A zebra's dazzling stripes make them among the most recognisable mammals. Though none have been proven conclusively, several theories attempt to explain the zebra’s stripes. The first states that stripes have an anti-predatory function by creating an “optical illusion”. The second points to a social role – each zebra is identifiable by its stripes and zebras with broader stripes receive more grooming. The third suggests the stripes help in thermo regulation and work as natural sunscreen. It has three, five, seven, or nine lines of turquoise, according to the rank of the wearer and only the richest royalist of families could wear nine lines.
