They dwell in dark corners and quiet conversation. They fall from the beams that hold up the world and all her beauty, and gracefully dance into nothingness. Try as you may, they will elude you. I've tried my very hardest to find just one of my own. I just end up with blackened hands and broken promises. They remain just out of arm’s reach. But I find it's better to count soot gremlins than sheep on nights like this. Nights when your eyelids are too heavy to hold up, but your brain decides that sleep is no longer on your to-do list. When you can't find the proper words to convey that the odd emotion you feel right now is merely depression’s hands wrapped around your waist--the comfort of a lover. When all you want to do is jump the fence and run, but the fence is twenty feet tall and made of smooth, cold concrete. If you just focus on the soot gremlins, watch them delicately sink into disappearance like a magic act, then sleep won't elude you like the soot gremlins do.

Soot Gremlins, an original

I wrote this around midnight last night. I’m not sure why, but the image of soot gremlins from My Neighbor Totoro pop into my cloudy, sleep-deprived mind. They’re very simple and childish, so I think that’s what makes them so comforting to me. In any case, I hope this is remotely enjoyable. Thanks for reading.
