sopranos art by Sam Evans

i need your thoughts on carmela soprano
THE BIRD FEEDAH
Carmela is a very interesting character to me. She basically has to survive on the hypocrisy that she’s settled into. She’s materialistic, shallow and above all else very protective of her lifestyle. At the same time, I do think she genuinely loves her children. Her and Meadow’s dynamic fascinates me, as you can tell she wants Meadow to go out into the world and thrive but is also terrified to let her escape their bubble. Same with Tony, but I feel she presents this worry in different ways than he does.
I feel like she is also a very lonely character. Anyone who has seen more than ten minutes of the show can tell you that Tony is a bad husband, but it goes even deeper than that I feel. Carmela, in a way, knew he would be sleazy and a cheat. But in her mind the one thing she asked for was discretion; for there to be a clear line between family life and mob life. Of course that’s not realistic, of course both would bleed into each other, especially with how Tony is. She married into the destruction and she herself can be very self destructive too.
She is also, very interestingly, one of, if not the only, character that can really talk to Tony. She knows that man. She knows every bit of him and I honestly think that’s what is so terrifying about Carmela to him. The Whitecaps fight is one of my favorite scenes ever, not just because it’s so raw but because it really is them laying out things they’ve been wanting to say to each other for YEARS. You can really understand Carmela as a person from that scene.
Overall I love her character, I love her interactions with people lmao. Love the classic mom passive aggressiveness. Love her wittiness. I love her hypocrisy and her fakeness. I love her genuine and real affection for Tony. I love her hatred for him too.
She’s funny as hell, complex and very intriguing to me. She represents the family as a whole, how it deteriorates over the course of the show, etc. She, like Meadow, represent Tony’s morals. The further he is from them, the deeper he goes into the darkness (aka season 6 lol).
Sorry I’m rambling and this probably doesn’t make sense and I have 93738282728 other things to say but yeah!!!!!!
