Y'all gotta read Won't Give Up on TS. At least until the "Second Angel." There's some kinda gross shit around one specific character, but it's thankfully tame, and the sheer audacity of the narratice makes it well worth reading anyway.

You would live within reasonable distance of a notable city, but not too far into the hubbub. You sound like a sensible, level-headed person; I would imagine you work now and play later, even if it means you have to be more busy than you’d like at times. A shop owner or teacher of some sorts? Locals with troubles in their gardens would know just who to consult, and often you have a solution- magical or mundane- to their woes. if this land is one where literacy is uncommon, you would make sure you possessed the skill. knowledge is power, after all.
