So long before Sir Bertilak de Hautdesert (who I personally suspect may be based on Vulgate cycle's Bertolai the Red), there was this guy:
a powerful Sorcerer-knight who aides and accompanies Gawain in this story
Is Igraine's husband after Uther Pendragon died (whom he won over with legit courting! Like a positive version of Klingsor from Parzival)
And is the one who engages Gawain with the Beheading Game
Very interesting. Also noting how the beheading game motif (which goes all the way back to Cu Roi in Irish Myth) in Gawain's stories have an element of familial ties present (Morgan le Fay in SGatGK, Gansguoter himself in Diu Crone).
