Salinegro - Sorraia x Lusitano
Did you know that
The Sorraia horsey is a very rare and very beautiful horsey. They come from the Sorraia River basin in Portugal and originally they lived wild and free in the valley salt marshes.
By 1930 there were a very small number of Sorraia horseys living in the wild and they were in danger of becoming extinct. That is until the Portuguese zoologist Dr. Ruy d’Andrade and his son Fernando created a conservation and breeding program for them. Nowadays sadly all the wild Sorraia horseys have gone to horsey heaven and all the remaining Sorraia come from Dr. d'Andrade's captive herd. They are one of the most endangered horses on the world.
These pretty horseys have very beautiful and unique markings they have a characteristic dark muzzle and dorsal stripe with black ear tips and sometimes black stripes on the legs and neck which earned them the local nickname of "zebro" or zebra horses.
