LET MEN CUDDLE/HUG EACH OTHER, CASUAL PHYSICAL AFFECTION IS GOOD
Xander was propped up in bed with a book in one hand and a glass of wine in the other when he heard his door open and shut and a heavy weight settled itself rather violently on his stomach.
“Hello, Laslow. Shot down again?” Xander asked, taking a sip of his wine nonchalantly. Laslow, laying pitifully face-down on Xander's stomach, whined so prettily, muffled by Xander's flesh. “I take that as a yes.”
“I don't get it, milord! Why don't women like me?”
“Try dropping the terrible pickup lines and simply beg. Women love a man who will lower themselves for them.” Xander joked dryly, pulling out a second wineglass and pouring Laslow a glass. “A drink?”
“You're a saint, milord.” Laslow got off of his lord, settled into bed beside him, and accepted the wine. This was commonplace, Xander sharing his bed chastely with one or even both of his retainers. The three were openly physically and verbally affectionate with one another, though the affection was innocent in nature. They were dear friends. They had permission to enter the Prince's chambers and simply lay beside him. Xander would even cuddle or hold them through their nightmares, Laslow especially.
“I know. Now, sit up and tell me what happened.”
“No, it's embarrassing. I choked completely, couldn't even get the pickup line out of my mouth before she'd thrown her glass of ale in my face and called me pathetic. Nohrian women can be so cruel, my homeland's women were so sweet and even gentle as they rejected you, but Nohrian women just... hnn! They cut straight to the heart.” Laslow lamented, falling back over Xander's lap dramatically. Xander chuckled.
“Perhaps you'd have better luck with men.”
“Ah, perhaps! I do like a fit bloke every now and then, sets your boundaries straight. For me, anyway. Anyway, how was milord's day?”
Xander shrugged. “Truth be told, I didn't do much today. I had some troop orders to finalize, but I managed to get that done in record time, and I've mostly been waiting for you and Peri to get home ever since. Is she back yet?”
“Mm-hmm. Got in the same time I did. She was tired and went straight to bed but I was depressed so I came here instead.”
Xander nodded. “I've noticed you haven't quite been yourself lately. What's got you so bothered, Laslow? Tell me.”
Laslow looked embarrassed and hid his blush under his glass of wine. “It's stupid.” He tried to protest weakly.
“Nonsense. I'm here to help, Laslow.”
Laslow sighed. “Well... alright. It's just... I'm 26 years old and I'm not getting any younger. Most men my age have married and had children by now. I feel like I'm being left behind, like I'll be forgotten when I'm gone. Is that stupid?”
“Not at all. I'm ten years older than you and I am yet unmarried and childless. You won't be forgotten, Laslow.” Xander said, pulling his retainer in for a quick hug. “Everything will be alright, Laslow. Don't fret.”
“I've just been so depressed.” Laslow stressed. “I've been finding it harder and harder to wake up every day. The war is over, I should be happy. So why do I feel so dead inside?” He took a big gulp of his wine and Xander poured him more.
“Perhaps you're just lonely.” Xander suggested. “The constant rejection by women likely doesn't help.”
Laslow sighed deeply.
“That was quite a sigh.” Xander commented, one eyebrow raised.
“Sometimes I simply wonder if I'd be better off dead.” Laslow admitted. “Part of me feels like I'm destined to die here in Nohr. A foreign man in a foreign land.”
“Now, don't say that, Laslow. Don't ever say that. Think of those who would miss you if you were to die. Think of us, sitting here in this room, enjoying one another's company. Think of Peri, and her tears. Think of your family. You do have a family, yes?”
“Technically speaking, yes. I did have a sister, though I've no way to know whether or not she's still alive, or whether or not she thinks I'm still alive.” Laslow said softly, twirling his wine around in his glass with his finger. He stuck his finger in his mouth to suck the wine off it. “I mean, she was older than me, and I always looked up to her. Fair-skinned and pretty, deadly with a weapon, strong-willed and with a sense of justice I simply didn't possess. Lucy, we called her.”
“Then think of Lucy. How disappointed she'd be to know you've died without saying goodbye.”
Laslow fell quiet. He took another gulp of his wine. Xander took hold of his shoulders and pulled him in. The embrace was more firm, more deliberate than his hugs of the past.
“I would have you stay here tonight. Stay with me, Laslow.”
“I am at your command, milord.” Laslow said dully, holding his wine up so Xander's sudden hug didn't spill it all over the Prince's expensive bedsheets. Wine did not come out of silk easily. He lowered his arm to take another sip while Xander rested his head on Laslow's shoulder.
“Don't go so dull with me, Laslow. I want to hear life in your voice.”
“Right now, milord, I don't know if I can do that.” Laslow admitted. “Let's start from the beginning, shall we? I was orphaned at 9, my sister and I and a small band of survivors of the war banded together and we all sort of raised each other as child soldier war orphans, we managed to win the war, but at what cost? We were stranded, alone, and so I left that world. I left that pain behind and I started over in Nohr. I changed my name, my very face, and started over. Milord, I should not be telling you this. I should not be telling you any of this. I made a vow to keep my identity a secret. But you're so kind, and so good-hearted, and you hold me with such conviction... tomorrow. Tomorrow I'll tell you the full truth, I swear it.” Laslow held his prince's face in his hands, cupping his cheeks and stroking them softly. “Please. Give me until then. Give me a reason to wake up tomorrow.”
Xander leaned in and gave Laslow a small kiss on the forehead. “Tomorrow, my friend. I will hold you to that.”
I'm going to try for my silver hair later. I bleached it this morning. I match the dog. LOL
