“Are you sure you’re going to be okay?” Beth sits crosslegged on the couch, watching warily as Rick paces in front of her. 

“Yeah. Yeah.” Rick brushes his jaw then shakes out his hand. He won’t stand still, not since the hourglass ran out an hour ago. Beth is exhausted just by looking at him. He shoots her a half-smile and a jerky thumbs up. “Good. I’m good. I’m fine.” 

Beth doesn’t believe him. “I’m sure I can ask Mr. Dugan for a scrap of metal somewhere if you want to punch something. I won’t blame you.” 

“I’m done with the punches.” Rick shakes his head. “I’m good. Actually, I quit.”

“...You’re done?” Beth echoes incredulously. Is this even Rick Tyler or...? “You don’t ever want to start a fight again?” 

Rick crosses his arms then uncrosses them. He sits down beside Beth. Before she can even wrap an arm around him he’s springing back up and pacing again. “I didn’t say that. I just want to give up being so aggressive. I’m done with it.”

“Yeah. Okay.” 

“I am!” he snaps, though it isn’t very harsh. “I want to be the peaceful JSA member for once.” 

“You look like a lion in a zoo, Rick.” 

“That is not true. I’m very composed right now,” he argues, convincing nobody.

“I don’t even recognize you anymore.” She’s half teasing, half not. 

“Why are you making this out like it’s a bad thing?” 

“It’s not a bad thing..Exactly...” Beth frowns. “It’s just that....How do I explain it?” She coaxes Rick to sit down and stay down. It takes pressing her hand over his jeans, leaning in and distracting him. His gaze falls to her lips and he almost kisses her but Beth pulls away at the last second so they could talk first. “I know that being so angry has hurt you. And you acted out on that hurt. But you’ve grown a lot since that, Rick. For most people, your power would be terrifying, but for you? Being Hourman is healthy.”  

Rick sits back, pulling his knees to his chest. “It doesn’t feel like it. Feels like the biggest fraud. Especially with all my damage. When I’m souped up I like it. The more I wreck, the better I feel. It is addicting. It’s like I’m an ISA-er in the wrong suit.” 

“But you’re not,” she stresses. “Because when you’re done with the hour, you know you’re done. You are so gentle even with your strength. You’ve never killed.” Beth kisses his cheek. “You’re a hero.” 

“You’re the hero,” Rick insists. 

“We both are.” 

Rick plays with his hands resting on his lap. “It makes sense. I don’t know how to process what we learned about my dad. I just know it makes sense.”

“Are you worried you’re going to get addicted like your dad?” 

Rick shrugs. “I mean, I suited up with Courtney every day for six months when we didn’t have to.” 

“So did I,” Beth points out. “And Yolanda.”  

Rick wrinkles his nose. “I’m trying to be self-deprecating here.” 

Beth gasps and pokes his side. “And I’m not letting you! I love you! You’re not your dad!” Rick bats her poking fingers away, swooping in to cup her face and giving Beth a long kiss instead. 

“Thank you for talking with me,” he says. 

“It’s what I do.” 

Rick kisses her again. “I know.” He pulls away and makes a face, glancing down the side of the loft at Pat’s workshop. 

Beth follows his gaze, trying to hide her smirk. “You want to punch something, don’t you?” 

Rick groans. “I wanna punch something so bad.” 

“Go find the spare boxing gloves.” Beth sighs and stands up. “I’ll ask for the metal.”

Jaebeom + hoe (as in the tool)

A blood curdling scream echoed through the valley. 

It was meant to be a relaxing weekend in the countryside. It was meant to be a getaway from your stressful 9-to-5 desk job. It was meant to be late mornings and snuggling up by the fire place at night. It was meant to be books in the den with wine as a snack. It was meant to be paradise in the valley in the cottage you rented on a whim.

But instead, you’re being harrased by a wild boar as soon as you got out of the car. Just get to the front door, just get in the cottage and you’ll be fine. But every time you took a step, the boar squealed and snarled and stomped at the ground ready to charge. So you cowered behind your car door and screamed. 

“Wah! Get back Penny!” Bellowed a tall man, swinging a hoe lazily in front of him; pushing the boar away from you. Another sharp yelp from him and a hard whack of the hoe against the ground sent the boar scampering into the depths of the valley. You watched it until you couldn’t see it anymore. 

Pulling the door open, the man held out his hand, inviting you to take it with kind eyes. Slowly standing, you wiped the tears from your cheeks and straightened your clothes. 

“I’m sorry about Penny, she doesn’t like strangers.” Said the man, kindness in his voice. 

“Why would you just let a wild animal like that just roam free?! I could have died!” You yelled, visibly shaken. The man shrugged, rubbing the back of his neck as he laughed, embarrassed. 

“We don’t normally get people renting the cottage, so.. I don’t know - I just let her roam free.” 

“Well I rented it and I don’t know if I should stay anymore.” Slamming your car door shut, the man jumped from the sound before quickly righting himself. 

“No no, please. Please stay, I’ll make sure you won’t see Penny, or any other animal during your stay. I’m Jaebeom, the owner.” He bowed slightly, holding out his hand one more time. 

You finally had a moment to look at him. Young and strong and polite. Handsome too. Maybe, you thought, you’d give him the benefit of the doubt. 

“Okay, I’ll take your word for it.” Jaebeom smiled as you shook his hand, a smile so sweet a part of you wished for some other wild animal would disturb you during your stay - just to see him again.
