I can remember a DS9 episode where they discuss the various settings (The Jem'hadar are confused as to why there even exists a 'stun' setting) and a TNG episode where they discuss the differences between phasers and disruptors, phasers being the classier weapon which disintegrates matter, whereas disruptors 'disrupt' the bonds and literally tear it apart. VOY also goes into that, differentiating between the methods of destruction, and 'Worst Case Scenario' has narrow vs wide spray beams.

ah thank you!! man i really need to start the other generations haha. but yeah i guess phasers just have like increasing levels of disintegration and stuff and the threshold between (heavy) stun and kill is the difference needed to go from stunning to killing a human??
