Discussing Headcanon's: Wirt and Greg's Homelife
something always felt off about us never hearing from their parents. their not at the hospital when they wake up even when Greg and Wirt are hallucinating Greg doesn't see their parents instead we see Langtree and Jimmy with greg not even commenting at it and acting as if they are his parents...we don't see from them we don't hear them. so could Wirt's self depravation and peoplepleasing and some of greg's habit of getting somewhat into trouble or doing things that make no sense like throwing the coins away when they need it all come from wanting to have attention.
so lets discuss the comics
wirt has several moments where he considers staying in the Unknown but stops himself saying he has to get Greg home first like in Hollow Town. Greg also has one of such moments. these are not children who want to go home because they miss their parents.
in fact heres another moment (Its in an epilouge of one of the comics which caan be aa bit fourth waall breaky but i think it counts) where you can ask where are their parents?
anad i mean Wirt keeps pointing out that greg is his half brother thaat they just share the same mother and yeah sure is probally because Wirt is angry about the whole divorce thing but greg is his half brother meaning with greg's age its been atleast 4 or 5 years if not more that this was the situation.
yet he keeps bringing it up.
than we have Wirt's ability to make decent looking food out of scraps sure the potato cakes tasted terrible but he literally only had dust, spiderwebs and potatoes
its implied he made the struggle meals before. why would Wirt ever need to know how to make food out of granola bars.
and than Hollow town just straight up confirms that Wirt feels under pressure espessialy with babysitting Greg
Greg even confirms Wirt is not doing his homework all the time (which i think this line implies that he has no time too)
in fact in most of Hollow Town Wirt hates he is associated with Greg's behaviour and both in the show aand comics keep insisting and keeps telling people greg is the one causing trouble .
"i always get in trouble for whatever he did"
this leads me to the golden child Greg and Parentified Wirt part of this headcanon
in Benevolent Sisters of Charity all Wirt wants is to rest because hes sick and in the end everyone or atleast beatrice and greg act as if hes selfish for that.
and when Wirt has the oppertunity too Greg decides to do something really messed up just so they can leave
unless you let them take my frog than your not a good brother
"Your can have one less brother". since when has greg been this manipulative or is this just something he picked up somewhere
Wirt in the comics has given one of their last food supplies to greg, he has carried greg on top of his shoulders for an entire day or so while he is implied to be a high schooler and a young one at that since he is suprised in Distillatoria that Jason is already driving a car which if we go by america since were talking abaout a high school aand stuff would be a minimum age of 15 which could mean they are indeed juniors so 14-15ish and greg is again what atleast what 4, 5 if not older?
when we do have the few mentions of the parents they come from greg one mentioning that his dad is encouraging Wirt to go into marching band another that he(greg himself) tried to pull off his dad's moustache and that he had made them little shows
It just feels like Greg is the prefered child and that some of Wirt's resentment can come from that i mean why would Wirt dislike his brother to such a degree otherwise? yet he still is the only person they have they only have eachother
course it feels like sometimes Wirt is talking from exprience
" I never seen you yell at a grown up before" is there some grown ups he should be yelling at? his parents maybe
"wirt deserves to be liked by somebody, besides us"
both in the episodes and the comics Beatrice has to point out that people are taking advantage of Wirt or that he's a pushover
and than theres this scene
i...greg is an impressionate child is he picking these things up from beatrice or their parents?
Wirt is also despite all this implied to still do a sidejob as aa babysitter for the neighbour and Greg also did chores for their neighbours and their mom still put going trick on treating with Greg to Wirt instead of going herself so she just dumped Greg over at the neighbours and hoped wirt would just pick him up huh.
in fact the only time Wirt spoke out besides against the beast in the finale is when someone insulted greg the brother he pretends to hate so much
that whole comic Wirt tried to find a job to get Greg a new shoe since he lost his. Wirt is so used to taking care of Greg over himself and thats why he resents him Greg gets the little attention his parents give and he is just left in his care for who knows how long how many years have they lived like this?
this interperation / headcanon also makes the Beast scene feel diffrent
Wirt: WAIT. THAT'S DUMB.The Beast: WHAT?Wirt: THAT'S DUMB. I'M NOT JUST GONNA JUST WANDER AROUND IN THE WOODS FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE.
Wirt is finally because Beatrice kept pointing it out standing up for himself he loves his brother but hes not gonna waste his entire life carrying for his brother hes not gonna throw his life and happiness away thats the solution. He finally accepts he has been used his entire life and he has enough. Of course it still ends with Greg saved but it felt important for Wirt to have this realisation that im pretty sure he needed Beatrice to drill into him for.
and Beatrice who seems to be the eldest of a pack of many siblings probally related alot to Wirt and was frustrated how much Wirt lost his sense of self and confidence thats probally why she was extra mean to him
