Everytime Im lost or despondent, there’s always the work of reading and writing. Writing is one of the most direct processes by which we can transmit experiences to other people. Writing is one half the act of connection. The other half, of course, is reading. And when im burnt beyond thought in one process I can always return to the other.
For me this process is sacred. So much of connection between people is in loss-heavy formats. Radio waves blistering out into static, or half-thought speech capturing nothing of intent. Reading and writing arent perfect, but they have the potential for the strongest transmission out of any medium. Neither memory nor record is perfect, and we as people lose so much all the time to entropy. But to write is to preserve in some way the momentum of a human experience, to store it in a form that can be delivered to the future.
and that’s all there is for me. people are better connected than they are isolated. People are smarter, funnier, and more loving when they understand one another. All art, but especially reading & writing is to participate in that great work of connection.
