ogre is so dumb! ogre is barely literate! ogre read ten nights of dreams but can only identify surface-level themes like the exploration of identity through the subconscious and the blurring of art and reality. ogre failed to grasp deeper themes of japanese nationalism in the face of western technological entanglement, cynicism towards interpersonal relationships, and the retreat into scholarship to find legacy and masculine identity

"Mon amour a la couleur de la nuit
Couleur des ténèbres
que vient visiter la lune" — Sôseki Natsume, in Haikus (trad. Elisabeth Suetsugu, éd. Picquier)
People often say that so-and-so brought tears to their eyes, but if you can cry, you've got nothing to worry about. As long as you have tears to shed, you can still laugh.
Natsume Soseki, The Miner
Often considered Soseki’s least popular novel, The Miner is the story of a young man with a broken heart and a bent for self destruction, running away from Tokyo to who knows where. Having never worked a day in his life, he is abruptly recruited to be a laborer in a mine and burrows deep into the earth, both physically and as a metaphor for his journey into his own psyche. The resulting story is at turns fluid, stagnant, deeply human, scornful of other humans, painful, and oddly funny.
Jay Rubin argues that this novel, though different from other books in the Soseki canon, was where Soseki allowed himself to dissect the human psychology as much as he wanted, and it serves as a bridge between his earlier and his later, more mature works.
