*puts on tin foil hat* ok here’s how darth maul can still win...
the people have spoken and i have listened! a second shelf has been created!
and thank you to everyone who gave me advice, i have decided not to use a racking for this one, bc my project is very small and i will only be putting light objects on it, but i will keep that in mind if i ever make a bigger bookshelf!
pretty proud of how shelf #2 turned out. it only took TWO HOURS to make! #myspeed #myimprovement
you have activated my woodworker trap card and I have two very important points:
If you still have all your fingers, you are not bad at diy woodworking! this is why I love this hobby. still got all your bits? not needing medical attention? whatever the wood looks like, you are winning! Pat yourself on the back!
point two if you want shelf #2 to Not Do That Shit and also you should do this for shelf #1 because with time It Will Do That Shit Too because of how wood behaves and misbehaves (technical term is racking--you know how a shitty bookcase ends up sorta...diagonal and turns into a folding bookcase over time? it happens bc of an interaction between the screws and the fibers of the wood--when you screw into the end of a board, it pushes the fibers apart! and since the screw is parallel with the fibers, this is easy to do so over time it pushes them more and more apart. which makes the screwed object kind of. not screwed. over the next few years or months or whatever, depending). The way you stop it is put a piece of wood that fits tightly between the upright supports on the bottom of the horizontal piece of wood. You can glue it or screw it or both--it can be fairly small, and you can use whatever you have lying around. Basically, it braces the shelf from the inside, and inhibits the side-to-side motion that allows it to wiggle and allows the screws to make their holes bigger and thus wiggle more. You can also just put a sheet of wood as backing--that's why Ikea bookshelves have the thin backing that you attach with eleventy billion nails and at least one bashed thumb, to keep them from misbehaving.
I hope this is useful--alas I rehomed all the shelves I built when we moved cross country but I might be able to find pics if you need illustration. Woodworking in the "I need furniture and I'mma build it now" mode is one of my favorite things in the world because it lets you be a feral gremlin re materials and I love me a hobby with a low bar for success (ie keep ur bits attached).
I think that would work! I was thinking something less prominent, like this…
Here’s what I did with a bunch of floor to ceiling shelves I made for our old house. It’s just a bit of scrap (old ikea bed bits actually) turned vertically and fitted under the second from top shelves. Featuring photobombing cats and two dogshit tables I built.
Here’s the bed! It actually folds but that doesn’t make it easy to move. This was my third iteration of the design; the first two were fulls, this one is a king. It does not wiggle or creak but it has been mistaken for being an addition to the house because I overbuilt it like woah. Also featuring photobombing cat.
Bed being assembled! No cats in this one, though.
Also fucking up the measurements is the most time honored tradition of carpentry. I’veseen professionals fuck up their measurements like once a week. If you look at the last picture, in the middle of the bed on the left side, there’s a section of lighter wood on the side of the bed under that big wide board? Yeah I was 4 inches short, and had to stuff an extra section in there to make sure the mattress could fit. Much swearing. But eh, didn’t lose a finger, it’s all good. As the guys I’ve been shadowing this summer say, “A little putty, a little paint, makes a carpenter what they ain’t” (someone who measures correctly lol).

Hey so that was a great date, yeah, but I don't think it's going to work out. Nono you didn't do anything wrong, and I have indeed had a crush on you since we started high school, it's just... well, I didn't want to bring it up at the time but we kinda got sucked into a portal fantasy midway through. We saved the kingdom over and over, relying on our knowledge of and trust in each other every time, throwing ourselves into the firing line to protect each other and using each others' conviction as a rock. We got married and lived a happy life together until the portal sucked us back mid-battle and you gave up all your memories of our journey in order to save my life right when we ended up back in the coffee shop. Yeah that was when I got a bit weird and went to the bathroom.
Anyway I thought we could push on and make the date work but I have all of these memories of secrets that this you never chose to share, decisions that this you never made, and intimacies that this you never experienced. And it's kind of screwing with the vibe yeah. Also on the date it was really, blatantly clear that you're sixteen whereas I have memories of ruling a fantasy kingdom for thirty years so like... that's a problem all on its own. Anyway this you just feels more like a daughter to me. A daughter with the woman I gave my heart and soul to over and over and received like in return, only to lose her forever on the journey home. On the plus side I can definitely help you with your math homework now.
so a few days ago I accidentally spilled some hot chocolate on my copy of Durrant’s the cloudy mirror, (which critically evaluates the strengths and biases of the historian Sima Qian) and i was in the uni gym for 1 hour painstakingly drying the pages with a hairdryer
today: i thought it would be funny to officially make an offering of some hot chocy to the Grandaddy of East Asian History himself, Sima Qian.
I brought a bar of whittaker’s just for this lol. no expenses spared.
Sima Qian’s Special Hot Chocy has 3 squares of dark chocolate, 1 tsp of sesame paste, 1 tsp of decaf coffee, a pinch of cinnamon, 2 marshmallows, a wafer stick and 1 cup or hot milk. now, i cant be sure that i am the first person in history to offer Sima Qian a cup of hot chocy, but i can be sure that this cup is the most unique, delicious and decadent!
Sima Qian was not present in person so I drank it on his behalf
Almost forgot, underneath it are a pile of history books from the zhou-han dynasties, the majority of which would not have been written had not been for the works of Sima Qian + “sexual life in ancient china” by RHV Gulik for laughs.

my very serious dante’s infernal bookmark is finished! (finally returned my book back to my friend as well). how many Hail Marys should i say to atone for my slothful ways, and avoid eternal torment?
