Ward bought the business in December -- almost exactly two months ago. It took some big sacrifices to make it happen. "We had to mortgage the house, take our savings," Ward said. "We had to risk it and we did." So far, it looks like that risk is paying off. Orders keep coming in. His Wallingford warehouse is packed with boxes that contain about 8,000 phones that have come in to be repaired or refurbished. "The company's doing well," Ward said. "And we think going forward it's going to be great. And I have a great staff."
Sotel 13. 1970s, West LA

Nearly defunct today, Sotel 13 is a West LA gang that dates back to the late 30's. Starting out as La Garra, and then Thee Falcons car club, they eventually adopted the name "Sotel" based on Sawtelle blvd. Despite being smaller than the other established west side gangs like Venice and Culver City, Sotel had developed a fierce reputation over the years, but like the other west side gangs, their biggest enemy turned out to be gentrification. There are few active members left today.
