Zeng Fanzhi’s 'Mask Series' launched the artist onto the global stage, becoming synonymous with the modern, urban Chinese aesthetic and establishing the artist as one of the leading figures of Chinese contemporary art. #Repost @sothebys Within Zeng’s famous series, 'Mask Series 1999 no. 2' is considered a rare work, created in the artist’s more mature period of 1999. Lounging amidst a bed of flowers, the masked figure embodies the artist's exploration of outward appearances and inner anxieties, reminiscent of the psychological portraits by Francis Bacon, while definitive of the post-1989 Chinese aesthetic. In his own unique style, he plays the two artistic genres off of each other, moving effortlessly between each medium while never asserting one above the other. Beginning his career as an advertisement and stage painter, Richter’s earliest paintings were influenced by his fascination with current affairs and popular culture, yet over the decades he would soon turn to abstraction titling one of his works ‘Abstract Painting’ or ‘Abstraktes Bilde’ for the first time in 1976. Pictured here is Richter’s ‘Abstrkates Bild’ from 1994, which will star in Sotheby’s Modern & Contemporary Evening Sale in London on March 2.
