I’ve lived in NYC for almost 18 years so it takes a lot to impress me. Today, I was blown away by the newly renovated galleries at @sothebys by @shohei_shigematsu of @omanewyork. The building looks like a world class art museum now except that everything is for sale! I’m so glad I wore sneakers because there was so much to see. It’s all thoughtfully laid out too. Definitely stop by before the auctions begin on May 14th. This painting is La Rue Halévy, vue du sixième étage by Gustave Caillebotte from 1878 on offer from The Levy Family Collection. The Russian-born artist and his wife, Bella, travelled from New York to Mexico City in the summer of 1942, and the canvas here is filled with charming motifs inspired by the brief sojourn. At the centre of the scene, a large horse rears, flanked by a woman holding her child. Above, a man wearing a sombrero floats by carrying his guitar. The lucid colour palette immerses the figures into a dream-like world, as if bathed in the moon-lit night sky. The work will be offered in the Modern Art Evening Auction this Saturday in Hong Kong. @sothebys ・・・ ‘Diego y yo,’ Frida Kahlo’s 1949 self-portrait, symbolizes the tempestuous relationship between Kahlo and Diego Rivera, who is depicted in the center of the artist’s forehead, bearing a third eye to symbolize the degree to which he occupied her consciousness. This emotionally charged painting alludes to Rivera’s relationship with María Félix, of whom the muralist painted a sensual portrait also in 1949. The relationship was the subject of numerous rumors, and although she joked about it publicly, Kahlo, who was a good friend of Félix, was deeply wounded. Here, her loose hair (usually tightly laced in braids) almost seems to strangle her; she has flushed cheeks, and an intense, tearful gaze. A spectacular example of the raw emotive power in Kahlo's work, the painting explores contemporary themes of identity and experience, the power of the gaze, ownership of one’s image, and one’s sense of self. Credit to @sothebys From an exceptional and distinguished private collection, this dazzling still life by Paul Cézanne will lead an exquisite group of four masterworks in our Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale this May in New York. Painted circa 1888-90, ‘Nature morte: pommes et poires’ is a poignant encapsulation of Cézanne’s greatest achievements and an extremely rare example of his quintessential still lifes of this caliber remaining in private hands. Such modest arrangements of apples, pears, tables, and ceramics fascinated Cézanne throughout his decades-long career and chart the progression of his artistic development. From the artist’s early investigations, which aimed to shock audiences through an ambitious handling of paint, to the complex output of his last decade, Cézanne continually reinvented his still lifes, exhibiting ever more experimentation and nuance with each canvas. Painted in a close-up view, Nolde uses the medium to its fullest, with overlaying pigment and vivid saturated tones, whilst his loose brushstrokes capture the velvety texture. Nolde painted flowers and gardens throughout his life, designing his own garden around two large flower beds forming the shape of two letters – the letter E, Nolde’s initial, and the letter A, the initial of his wife Ada.
