5 Things You Need to Know from Sotre
Sotre is housed in an iconic double-shotgun on Magazine Street and beyond the doors is a beautifully curated collection of furniture, accessories, jewelry, custom linens and unique gifts. Earlier this year, I attended an educational event hosted by owner Grace Kaynor who shared her expert advice on wellness and entertaining. I went home with a packet full of information, so sharing the highlights with you here!
1. Keep household plants in every room. The bacteria in the soil reduces volatile compounds, such as formaldehyde, and contributes to cleaner air quality in your home. This is especially important for homes of the elderly, and homes with children and those with allergies. Plus, fresh plants add a gorgeous touch to any room!
2. Use everyday ingredients to clean with to avoid bringing harsh chemicals into your home. For example, you can use vinegar in place of bleach, baking soda to scrub tiles, and hydrogen peroxide to remove stains.
Here is a recipe for an all purpose household cleaner from Sotre:
All Purpose Cleaner
1/4 cup white vinegar
1 3/4 cups water
30 drops of essential oils (one of these combinations):
15 drops lavender & 15 drops lemon
10 drops eucalyptus, 10 drops peppermint & 10 drops wild orange
30 drops On Guard (protective blend)
Combine in a 16 oz spray bottle
3. Essential oil diffusers are a must for the home. Diffusers work by dispersing essential oils into the air through micro-droplets of water vapor using ultrasonic vibrations. As the water vapor passes through the air, the smell and therapeutic effects of the oils are carried through the space. Certain essential oils such as, melaluca, lemon, or any other citrus can be used for their disinfectant properties.
Here are some Sotre suggestions for essential oil combinations:
Elevation- a lively citrus blend
Bergamot, Rosemary and Wild Orange- creates an uplifting yet calming aroma
Clove, Wild Orange and Black Pepper- awakens the tastebuds (great for a dinner party!)
4. Did you know natural light provides the body with vitamin D, lifts mood, improves concentration, and aids sleep? Sotre explains that for an event during daylight hours, it is best to host it in a room with exposure to natural light. If you don’t have exposure to natural light, it is important to use strategic lighting. Sotre advises that during the day you only need to turn on so much light as to bring in a sense of natural light and the feeling of an outdoor space to the room.
5. Use of scented candles for the bathroom, the entry hall and the cocktail area, but warns against the use of scented candles for the dining table. The smells of candles and food can be off-putting for guests. Sotre also cautions against the use of different smells in your home. Stick to your one, favorite scent across the house!
Pop by and scout out this local business. Grace has truly done her research to create a peaceful and relaxing home environment!

Isn't it weird how you can have friends, but also no friends at the same time?
