And why is it I love musicals so much? Probably because the idea of singing how you are feeling instead of just saying it out loud (or, not saying it at all) really appeals to me. The characters in these movies use every ounce of their emotion to belt out what they really think, and it is believeable because actually, you might not be able to imagine them just coming out and saying it. I give you Rizzo in Grease as a case study – her emotional moment was played out in song in a way that really resonated.
I understand though, that not every burst into song moment in a musical is realistic (I mean the whole singing whilst proposing whilst synchronised swimming scene in this series of Glee was too much for words). But the characters in these films in general have it right. And there is much we can learn.
I’m not suggesting you break out into a crazy rap number when you are pissed off on your daily commute (although if you do, please please film it) but using music and songs to soundtrack the important points of your life is an excellent way of both unleashing your emotions and building a memory that will last.
