This is a song about being possessed by the power of dance, not something I have ever had to worry about, but luckily AB frame it in a way that is accessible for me.

J: Witching Waves’ Fear of Falling Down is a bit of a brutalist pop classic (and no, I’m not just saying that because the album cover features a brutalist building). This is my favourite track from the album.

Dream Nails - Bully Girl

Here we have quite a new band from London.

I would say this recording exhibits Mark Jasper’s now customary airy-drum tones, keeping the cymbals a little bit soft, with that lively floor tom and a guitar the tone of which makes clear the microphone has been carefully positioned. The band is not scared to have the vocal front and centre and to leave one main guitar as the focus, resisting the temptation to layer it up, which I feel adds to the impact here.

Then the surprising and ebullient backing vocals arrive with some humour and hyperactivity, one appears to be intoning ‘I wanna see your face again I found you on the internet’ which is great.

From a nostalgic point of view, this reminds me slightly of the band Angelica whose song Bring Back Her Head was a minor John Peel hit in about 1999. Henry

Here is a long sentence about this new Dignan Porch song:

I have recorded an EP or LP every year with Dignan Porch since 2011's Deluded which is the one everyone seems to love from my old studio which closed down but this new Album we're making is the first one where we've done the whole thing in the fully operational Sound Savers Mk II, this is the first song to be finished, the lyrics are dignified, a tambourine runs throughout, you can hear our new Pultec EQ clone on the drums on this track which, I'm sure you'll agree, is the new distinctive timbre of this summer.

The next song we'll be disseminating has reverse hand claps so look out for it.

I either write in the third person, or I just get on it with it.. This is my (Mark’s) band Witching Waves. We just released our second album, in the UK on Soft Power, in the US on Happy Happy Birthday To Me. This is a song from it.

The whole album was recorded and mixed by me at Sound Savers, it took a long time if you compare it to some of the albums I have recorded here, and it took a very short time if you compare it with Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk.

Doing a record on your own is hard work, and often you are coming from such a subjective place that you can’t figure out whether something is good or just a total disaster.

In general, I’m pleased with how it came out. I hope you like it too.

Sauna Youth - The Bridge (via Sound Savers)

This song was recorded at our studio last year by my business partner and fellow engineer Mark Jasper. Mark is a very modest person very unlikely to blow his own trumpet so it falls to me to do it for him; I even felt compelled to upload an image to his discogs profile recently so that admirers may see his face.

What I like about this recording is that it treads the fine line between being controlled in terms of clarity and being blown-out in terms of natural distortion being applied during mixing or through the tube pre-amp during recording, and so on. I would suggest this is the holy grail of the hybrid recording process which combines in our case a Tascam 388 1/4" tape machine and a reasonably hi-fi Pro Tools rig with an iMac and associated bells and whistles. Some punk records in my view fall too far either side of this fine balance.

The album seems to be appearing on a lot of end of year lists not to mention being a favourite of BBC's popular pop music dj Marc Riley for whom SY have recorded approximately 17 sessions. We can only hope that it will take its deserved place in the top 10 of Village Voice's coveted 'Pazz & Jop poll' at year's end.
