THE GULF BREEZE UFO ENCOUNTERS: ED WALTERS ON SOUNDSIDE DRIVE - On the evening of January 12th, 1988, local contractor Ed Walters - who had previously taken pictures of UFOs outside of his house in Gulf Breeze, Florida - was "compelled" to head to a secluded worksite area which was under development. While on Gulf Breeze's Soundside Drive, Walters finds the road "blocked" by a large craft hovering just above the road. Camera in hand, Walters takes a photo of the object: a "bluish, domed craft" with a glowing "ringed-bottom" that reflected light off of the road. Lauded by MUFON (and a few other researchers) as genuine, the "Road Photo" became iconic UFO imagery and a point of controversy and contention (noted Ufologist Dr. J. Allen Hynek was not impressed by the images and thought Walters was a hoaxer). Allegations of staged double-exposures and "glass reflection" hoaxing plagued Walters after a model (and an alleged collaborator) surfaced to add doubts to Walters' encounter claims. The hoaxing allegations also fueled conspiracy beliefs of an attempted disinfo/cover-up of the Gulf Breeze events by sinister forces. While the true story surrounding these events may never be known, the controversial Gulf Breeze/Walters Affair remains a landmark part of UFO lore.
